New Toy: Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z3 (Now Sony DSC-W1)

Well, after slumming it with the nice little compact Sony CyberShot-U20 for a few years now, I finally ordered a new camera. (In retrospect, I wish I had ordered it before the trip to Canada this past weekend, but I was waiting to make sure a check from a client that I do side work for arrived before dropping the cash.)

I've been wanting this camera since it was in its first revision (Z1), and now that the Z2 has passed, and the Z3 is out, I chose the Z3.

Review:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/z3.html

Best deal I found for the camera itself:
http://www.camerasandelectronics.com...asp?item=mndz3

The memory card:
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...180-612&DEPA=1

The battery charger:
http://www.thomas-distributing.com/m...ry-charger.htm

Two sets of these batteries:
http://www.thomas-distributing.com/i...ebatteries.htm

The case:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...=UTF8&v=glance

All should be here by the end of the week.

Ooooh. Nice. Let me know how good the cam is, I know someone interested in that cam for that price.

Re: New Toy: Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z3

I've been trying to decide between Dimage Z3 and Canon Powershot S1 for some time now (currently own Powershot A40). Please let us know what you thínk after you've used it for a while. I'd be especially interested to know how it handles full zoom and with moving targets. I'm looking for inexpensive/easy-to-use camera for track days next summer and skiing slopes during winter.

Re: New Toy: Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z3

Nice. There seems to be a whole collection of cameras, from different makers, that use the same body/design. I wonder if they are all made in the same place, with different guts and labels.

The short movie on Steve's site looks great

Conq, because of you I got the U20 after my Kodak camera died. It's served me very well, and really is small enough to take everywhere.

Yeah, it's a great little camera. Takes excellent pictures, and you can't beat the size. I'll be keeping mine too. I just wanted one with higher resolution, and a zoom. (12x )

A good indicator of this is look at the f-stop number. It should be a range (ie 4.0-7.0) with the higher number being the f-stop at full zoom. Lower is better.

A friend of mine bought that camera...it takes excellent pictures.

Gotta dump my Kodak one of these days.

But, the ratio is what really matters. The Z3 goes out to 420mm (with a 4.5), and the S1 only goes to 380mm (with a 3.1). I don't know how to calculate it out, but they are probably fairly close...

Re: New Toy: Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z3

Well, used it all weekend. It's a great camera, but it's just not for me. I need something more compact. Sending it back for a refund.

Picked this up today: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/w1.html
