[Niagara] is this a cool shot?

I went to Niagara a few weeks ago and snagged some shots (can post up if anyones interested in more) but for some reason I dig this photo, is this a cool shot or am I stoned?

Sorry, you folks are the most phototography inclined people I know

just to clarify - Im 7/1 on the "I don't understand whats good about it?" mentality. I'm hoping I'm not just doomed to take bad photos and think they're good for the rest of my time here

If you enjoy the shot why care what others think. I have tons of waterfall pictures and I am sure that some are lost on others (some even on me ) but I enjoyed taking them. Also my favorites are seldom those of others.

I can answer that..quite possibly the largest projection spotlights with color array lens filters.

..placed across from the falls (actually they are on a hill with a road in front of it about 25' in the air).

Re: [Niagara] is this a cool shot?

It's a good shot technically. Compositionally, well that one's up for debate. At first glance I like it...I wouldn't frame it but I do like it.
You need to ask yourself what the emphasis or focus of the shot is. I'm guessing the lighted falls not the rapids. If this is the case, you need the lighted part to fill more of the frame. With the lightest part of the photo on the extreme edge like that the viewer's eyes go right off the image to the left...you want them going across or into the photo.

If the focus was the rapids..well, you need a flash...lots and lots of flash.

But, as was previously stated: if you like it and had fun taking it, who cares what anyone else says?

Thats what I was wondering, the technical side of things (firstly). I'm not sure if there was something I could do to catch the rapids better (sans flash). Though that shot actually shows more light then was present. But the comment on flash (and lots of it) solves that one.

I'm still working on the composition of the shots...I've found the best thing to help develop better pictures is put a smaller mem. card in my camera . That fall photo was tough because they fall off and where they do it's sort of hard to get an angle showing the perspective and depth accurately and maintaining the angluarity of the top of the table rock.

For some reason I like night photography better then daylight (less colors, easier to do maybe?).

Thanks NH and all that commented on this thread

Chain's gone man...and we need something completely useless to discuss in his absence besides how in the F "Stegens Mom in-law" came into money, don't we? So I thought weird photos would be a good filler

Re: [Niagara] is this a cool shot?

I would have liked to have seen more of the falls. A little too much black and ultimately dead space than I would have liked.

The 2nd series, 1st picture is very nice though. Shoulda been a poster for the Abyss.

Be fast or be last.

Night photography has a different set of obstacles to overcome....so it's not really any easier or harder than daytime stuff...just different. You just have to remember that when you have a lot of black/emptiness in a photo you need to think of it as negative space. Negative and positive space need to work together.
There's nothing like practice to make better photos. Before you click the shutter next time, ask yourself "will anyone else looking at this (who has never been here/or seen this event/etc) understand what the photo is and be interested?
Most people tend to shoot too emotionally. They're out somewhere see something really neat and *click!* take the shot. Then when they get it back or look at the shot at home, it's like, uhhhh what did I take a shot of? OR because they were there in that environment they know and have the context to support it...but when you show it to Mom who wasn't there...well, she's going to be lost. I'm working on this myself.
