Dell XPS first impressions (drool/brag thread)
BDA116 version: the Dell XPS system kicks some serious ass, and if you've got a problem with that, piss off
I just got a Dell XPS system, loaded almost to the hilt. 3.6GHz, 1GB DDR2 (yeah, I'll get more eventually), 400GB SATA, 74GB Raptor, Audigy 2, 20" LCD (model 2001FP), 16X DS/DL DVD, and the top-of-the-line ATI X800XT 256MB card. I've thrown in my 'old' 200GB and 160GB drives (the one remaining 160GB that I have will stay in the old system that I have; shame when the smallest drive that I have is a 160...), for a total of 834GB in the box. The system (minus the 74, 200, and 160 drives), complete, was ~$2000. To put that in perspective, the 400GB drive, CPU, RAM, and graphics card alone cost about that much, if bought 'cheap' separately on the net.
Anywhooo, running a preliminary ATITool benchmark (the spinning fuzzy die) gave me a 400 average frames per second, or nearly 400% faster than my 'old' system (which in itself was able to run Far Cry, Doom III, etc at the highest settings, with only minor slowdowns when lots of particles, shadows, and environmental effects were being displayed simultaneously). The 400fps are before overclocking, optimizing, tweaking, etc. In other words, it's a sick, sick system. Alienware's best, probably costing about twice as much (not including a top 20" LCD), might get these numbers.
I'll run 3DMark05 and Aquamark3 once I'm done setting up this machine, but if the rough benchmark is any indication, I will be even more blown away by those scores.
