Second hand smoke

As some of you know, my wife and I had a baby two weeks ago. Everything is great and everyone is healthy, unfortunately my wife has to go back to work the 1st week of December. The bad part is that she works in a pub and breathes in second hand smoke all night. She is breastfeeding now, and we'd like to continue for as long as possible, but we're worried about the effects of the smoke on her breast milk. Pumping was an idea, but my daughter is eating so much my wife can hardly keep up as it is, let alone make enough to pump. Anyway, does anyone have any experience or knowledge on this, we called the pediatrician, but she seemed wishy-washy with her answer. Any help would be great.

I would be concerned just because both are priceless to you. That said most of the second hand smoke studies that I have heard of were a bit fishy.

Re: Second hand smoke

Just the possibility of it harming the baby, no matter how minimal, would be enough for me to want her to stop breastfeeding. That, or have the wife take a different job.

Schwaberts, I think your wife is probably a decent filter for the poisons in reality. I wouldn't be happy for her, though.

My three were all brought up on bottles anyway, it allows greater sharing of the load and pleasure between dad and mum IMHO. I believe the innoculation effect can be obtained with low levels of breast feeding.

I edited my post, and yours, in hopes of alleviating any more puking.
