Re: The cast came of today

I went in to see the ortho doc today and he got me out of my cast and is leaving it off. *I'm amazed that he did it because I've only had it on just shy of 4 weeks and the injury was just a little less than 5 weeks ago. He put me in a brace and laid it out pretty plainly to be good or I'll be back in it.

My wrist is stiff as hell and I can't bend it too good so far. The doc didn't line me up for rehab, which suprised me and instead gave me some basic exercises to do.... Wanking wasn't one of them and besides, the wrist is still too sore for that.

If there's anyone on the board that knows anything about rehab or physical therapy, could you post some info or shoot me a PM on what will help with range of motion and strength?

For anybody else that's had a wrist fracture, how long did it take to get back to normal? *I was hoping to race again on July 5th & 6th, but with the way it feels right now, I'm not sure that's going to happen.

July is a long time away. You want to be careful not to over do it too soon. Do the therapy exercises that the doc gave you. It will start to feel better in a week or so. But, that does not mean you should go on the bike that quickly.

Re: The cast came of today

h8, congrats on the cast. They took it off quick. I went in yesterday to get mine off also but I had already cut it off 3 weeks ago with my dremel. Then again it went on Feb 2nd with a rebrake in between.

This was a multiple fracture of both forearm bones (in half), wrist and hand. After the cast came off I couldn't move the wrist at all. After 2 weeks I had full motion to the wrist. As soon as you get full motion you should start strength training it, pending doctors blessing (Cover my ass statement).

Hopefully you've used your down time, like me, to order all new fancy doo-dads for the bike. Rebuilding the beast has been better than any physical therapy.

Re: The cast came of today

Just DO NOT over do it - you can very easily over do it and cause alot of damage . Nice and easy is the way to get it working again . I broke my arm just above my wrist, and believe you me , the push to button your own pants again is a strong urge, but, go slowly.

Re: The cast came of today

So why don't you 'suggest' to the Doc that 'you'll do better in rehab' if that's what you want. Most Docs today are open to having the patient involved in their care and are willing to listen to a suggestion like this. It's no skin off their nose or money out of their pocket...

h8,

Can't remember; was yours the scaphoid? I went through physical therapy for mine. I can give you some feedback if that's what yours was.

Is a paradigm worth 20 cents?

Re: The cast came of today

Thanks for the suggestions everyone..

aBnorMal,

I just about had my cast off with all the wrenching on bikes I've been doing. I fixed my buddy's bike back to race ready because in short, I took him out due to a lot of mitigating factors and was overall responsible. As for my bike, I've gotten it torn down and ready to start fixing. It's going to be a month or so before I will have the $$$ to get it back up to track spec, but it will happen.

Tigerblade,

No, it wasn't the scaphoid, but was the distal radius, which is directly behind the scaphoid, as well as, the ulnar styloid. The nasty fracture was the head/joint of the radius where it meets the scaphoid, so maybe some of the PT you had would work.

Re: The cast came of today

I was told a good exercise to regain strength in your wrist after a bad injury was to use a towel or something to use as resistance against you flexing your forearm muscles. Hold down on the towel with one hand and with your injured hand, palm up, try to pull your other hand up. Squeeze a tennis ball or something to build the strength back in your hand as well. Good luck healing...I know it sucks because I just had to go through it a couple months ago.
