Speaking of wireless....

I have a Linksys wireless network thingy hooked up to my desktop. I can access the web from my laptop and pda but I cannot get to my desktop computer files with the laptop. Also, all I have to do is turn on my laptop and it automatically hooks up to the wireless web thingy.

How do I get access to my desktop files from my laptop and how do I make it more secure as to need a password to log on from any other wireless device.

I have a Vaio desktop and a Vaio laptop and a Dell pda. Not sure of the model numbers, but I don't know if that will help.

Re: Speaking of wireless....

If your wireless is not locked down, worry about that before sharing any files...

Re: Speaking of wireless....

The router should have options for WEP and/or MAC Filtering. I use both for security.

Re: Speaking of wireless....

Turn off broadcasting as well, that way people will have to know your settings to see your stuff.

OK, let me explain the fact that I am lucky to be able to know how to connect to this interweb address. If you will be kind enough to help me, please do so in english as I am not a tech by any means.

I had to re-enable broadcast on mine, because the XBox wireless adapter didn't want to connect otherwise. Haven't re-tried it lately, with updated firmware though. Still, with the 128bit key, and MAC Filtering, I should be fine.

Easiest way is to just RTFM. It should have step by step instructions, and examples of how to secure your wireless network.

Sykotyk,
See this is how you do it, plan a nice ride close to your house, and then a couple of geekier folks can swing by on the way out and get everything set up for you..

WPA (not WEP)is the best encryption too.

If you just hooked up your "wireless thingy", and did nothing else, you're just asking to get hammered. It has the default name, password, and unsecure settings, so anyone with some skill would not only be able to look at your shared files, but also deny you your own internet access, and log everything you do on the network/internet. Scary stuff
