Suncom/Cingular Merge

So I get this letter in the mail yesterday saying that Cingular will now be my carrier. Guess Cingular is taking over Suncom in VA and NC. I'm hopeing that means there will be more towers, so better signals, not that my signal is bad, but always room for improvement.

Anyone else use either of these, did you get a letter?

Re: Suncom/Cingular Merge

I've had Cingular for over 5yrs now and have no problems to speak of. I've been on the GSM network for over a year, and while coverage wasn't too great outside of the city at first, in the last 6-8 months I've had no problems anywhere I've gone. Once their done combining towers with AT&T, coverage should not be an issue unless you're in the middle of the boonies.

The Suncom/ATT customers that are on a TDMA network, the way I understand it are getting switched to Suncom. I know I got "that" letter. But I think if you are att/suncom GSM, you are getting thrown to cingular. I just got a V551 with cingular and man do I love it!

I'll have to check on that phone, I wouldnt mind getting a new one, and I can't find a better deal for minutes. $60 unlimited minutes, I use between 1800-2400 minutes a month. I never use the house phone.

yep...being that I am (or was) an AT&T GSM customer, I got the letter from Cingular....I've been impressed with it so far...I have the Nokia 3650...when I come to my job 20 miles or so outside of the city, the phone switches over to Cingular....but when I get closer to Raleigh, it switches back to AT&T Wireless...so I am assuming the converting of towers and switches isn't complete just yet....should be soon though...

All SunCom TDMA and GSM customers in Virginia (and Outer Banks, NC) will be switching over to Cingular, and network improvements should soon follow. Even though the stores haven't been rebranded yet, all of the VA employees are now being paid by Cingular.

NC is a little different... SunCom has spectrum (coverage) in all of NC except the Raleigh-Charlotte market, which was licensed to AT&T. Cingular already has a license for the entire state, so most, if not all, of the NC AT&T assets are going to SunCom, who will then be a competitor to Cingular in NC. I imagine that Cingular will keep AT&T's Raleigh customers, but I'm not sure about that one.

Speculation is that eventually T-Mobile (who doesn't have coverage in NC) will buy SunCom.
