conspiracy?

So i am in the lovely state of wiscooonsIn and my wife calls to tell me we have no internet connectivity. i have her run all the usual test and can not find any issues here. i have her look at the connection at the wall and outside, nothing.

so i call tech support and try to have them ping the modem, he says it is off line and not powered on. it was powered on. so i tell them to dispatch a tech to my home.

he arrives at my house around 6pm last night after trouble shooting, he tells me that my modem is fried. it was not holding the ip or could not contact the dhcp server. he told me that he had replaced 14 modems in the past 4 days. He tells me that he has NEVER replaced a modem in 4 years of doing his job. I ask him what types of modems they were. he starts listing them off - NONE of them are the type that my cable company rents. I thought that was odd in itself. But then thought back to the beginning of last month when i dropped my cable service and just kept the highspeed internet. the rep was trying to charge me a fee for renting a modem that i had bought when i lived in NJ. she was quite intrigued that i had a modem on their network that was not "theirs" i heard some typing and then we went about our business.

now, i am not the one to believe people or companies are out to defraud people. but this just seems a little too coincidental for my tastes. 15 modems within a 5 day stretch and NONE of them are rented by the cable company

Re: conspiracy?

Interesting scenario, to say the least... Perhaps a class-action lawsuit in your future?

Re: conspiracy?

Kind of off-topic here, but do you have to use a specific modem brand supplied by your broadband supplier (Comcast or SBC), or are modems considered generic? I do know that you need a cable modem for cable and a DSL modem for DSL. Just wondering...

Re: conspiracy?

modems are generic. all they need is to register the MAC address and you are good to go

Re: conspiracy?

Hmm. Interesting.

I have Cablevision and every evening for the past week or so, it slows to a crawl. Very annoying. If I wanted to wait 5 mins for pages to load, I'd have kept dial-up. I think I see some phone calls in my future.

How'd I know? By the way, Comcast sucks even more, if that's at all possible. Don't ask me how I know...

Re: conspiracy?

Knowing how the stuff all works in the back end, it would be VERY hard for the cable company to zap a single modem... they would have to zap every modem (and digital cable box, for that matter, which is basically a cable modem with a video processor) on the entire headend segment you are on. To make it more complicated, the headend systems out there don't have that functionality... so someone would have to manually go to the headend in your neighborhood, intentionally spike the line, fry everything on it, and then move on... no really a scalable plan.

Re: conspiracy?

or they could just target all MAC that do not start with a certain string. if they can ping an individual MAC why couldn't they do other things to it?
