Hubble Axed by Accountants

I've always thought Hubble should be an embarassment to Nasa (a technician grinding the lenses told the PhD types the optics curvatures were off but the PhD dismissed him) but it did give some amazing information.

It'd be neat to shoot up a new one that could see without "glasses" and with new technology...but we know that won't happen anytime soon. We gotta hire more people for the IRS.

They don't want to save it, but they're gonna spend $75mill to attempt to bring it down safely? Are they trying to top the Guiness worlds most expensive paper weight category?

Re: Hubble Axed by Accountants

It's a shame for sure. They really didn't do that program right at all.

On a side note, there are some new ground based telescopes that are amazing. In Arizona they are building a Binocular telescope. Two mirrors that will alternate their motions to cancel out any light being admitted in a particular wave length. This is to assist in finding other earth sized planets orbiting distant stars. They've already identified 135 targets, so it's a matter of filtering out the proper background information.

Pretty geeky but cool stuff.

Re: Hubble Axed by Accountants

It is really too bad. Hubble send us some great pics of what was happening out in space. Many dollars went towards that program. I think it was in the 10s of billions of dollars. Now they are going to scrape it. I for one wish they would replace the batteries and let it continue until a better one is built when we could more afford it.

.
Even though we are having some great success with ground based units, systems out of our atmospere will give better results.

Not Why. What. And, even more important, did it respond?

Re: Hubble Axed by Accountants

Well, if we weren't on a half-cocked plan to rush off to Mars maybe we could have saved Hubble, or built a new one that was better by using newer than early 80's technology. I guess NASA only gets so much money, and the reason Administrator O'Keefe gets his paycheck twice a month is to sit down and make the tough calls. If they have a plan to get to the Moon again and then to Mars, they are going to have to focus on that. To bad his guidance may be more from the political ambitions of the White House than from real science...

Yes, why do we have to spend $$$$BILLONS$$$$ of dollars sending spacecraft to Mars, Venus, IO, or sending people back to the moon (think we have been there enough). Doing this to see if a rock in outer space has or had water crystal on it at one point. Lets get a grip folks.

We never made it to the moon. The landings were all faked in the Nevada desert.
