Is cable really worth it??

Okay so I've had cable internet for like 3yrs now w/o any problems BUT this week has been absolute hell I am so ready to unplug the network cable from my router and swing my cable modem over my head and whip it through a wall. I absoluetly cannot hold a connection the time varies for how long I'm connected and how long I lose it from minutes to HOURS. So I'm thinking of switching to DSL, actually let me re-phrase that I have been thinking of switching to save some cake and this is really pushing me. I cant get a wireless signal to my laptop at the same time my desktop loses connection so I dont think its a single port problem, I have reset my router many times, unplugged both to reset them many times also nothing seems to be helping.

Re: Is cable really worth it??

How old is the modem? My connection sucked until I recently bought a new modem. My previous one was several years old. Simply replacing it made a HUGE difference.

As for the wireless issue, that would be a problem with the router, not the cable connection.

Who's your cable provider? If it's Comcast or Adelphia, switch and don't look back.

If it's the wireless signal you're having trouble with, try a different router.

Original modem, I'll look into a new one, plus it was the free one the cable company provided

I mentioned the wireless just to give an idea that it wasnt just a single faulty port on my router

Re: Is cable really worth it??

From my personal experience, and I know speed varies in many different ways with cable, no, never again.

If you have a habit of being home on the net from 1:00 AM to 7:00 AM, or from 9:00 AM till about noon, cable is much faster. But during peak times, I saw speeds comprable to dial-up.

Like I said, my experience and people who were neighbours.

Actually if I followed right, it is the router not your internet connection. Regardless of your modem connection to the internet the wireless signal to the router should still exist. Does this also happen if you plug into the router with a hardwire?

Re: Is cable really worth it??

I have Comcast in South Jersey and it is always fast, no matter the time of day. The only advantage DSL would have for me is faster upload speeds than cable and sliglty lower cost. Not enough motive for me to switch, since my monthly cost for both Comcast internet and Comcast High Def digital cable is only $70.

I may have worded it wrong, I can still see my wireless signal just cant get any websites to load or AIM to run. I tried plugging my pc directly into the modem but that cut me down to 10MBs vs 100 then said something about connectivity failure.

Re: Is cable really worth it??

I must be backwards. I just switched from DSL(Century Tel) to cable(Charter). Speed is definitly faster 750kps to 3mbs advertised. And the cable is only $30 a month compared with $35 for the DSL. I also use it in those off peak hours mostly and I have no problems. If any of you guys are paying more than $30 a month for any connection and have had it over a year call your service provider and ask for a re-rate. When I had SBC DSL a customer service agent said I should do this every year or they will keep you at the higher rate until you ask them to lower it.

Re: Is cable really worth it??

Yeah, I paid more for Verizon DSL than I pay for Mediacom cable now. $50 for Verizon, $40 for Mediacom.

And Verizons advertised 756k down and 128k up was bunk. I never got anywhere close to that.

So now I pay $10 less a month for 3MB down and 256k up.

And never experienced any "noticeable" slow down.

Re: Is cable really worth it??

Cable here is $50 vs $30 for DSL (Verizon 1.5 down) Brother has cable and all he has is problems. He's switching to DSL.

Re: Is cable really worth it??

I have DSL, had cable before (Adelphia) and yeah, when I download a large file cable was a few seconds quicker but who really cares. Web pages open just as fast, almost instantly. Unless you're into online gaming or massive file transferring why pay the extra? DSL is plenty for me and it's $25 cheaper! Hasn't gone out once in the past 2 years.
