Yesterday at lunchtime I walked into a fairly empty EB at the mall and proceeded directly to the counter, where there were no customers. The forty-something clerk looked up from a the stack of GT4 boxes he was pricing.
I said "Hi. I'd like a couple copies of GT4, please."
With a half-frown and one slightly raised eyebrow, he queried: "Did you make a reservation?"
I said "No I did not."
He said "You really should reserve a game like this. But we just happened to get sixty extra copies."
I said "Well, then I guess I lucked out."
What a maroon! But long story short, I paid for my two copies and left.
After work, my buddy came over for a while (to get his copy), and we played some (split screen) head-to-head arcade mode for a while. It was okay, but what I love is simulation mode.
Instead of 'cheating' and importing my GT3 licenses (all Golds, thanks!) and cars, I decided to go through all the GT4 license tests. I started with the B tests (no choice), and buzzed right through with the "conventional" controller and got my bronzes and the license. Then I hooked up my wheel (I got the new Logitech Driving Force Pro last fall) and started working on silvers. Test number five (lap of Tsukuba in a Mini) held me up for about twenty minutes; my best lap was about .3 too slow. My wife had come into the room, and after suffering through five or six attempts, she gave me an ultimatum: make the next run my last, or she was going to bed without me. I guess that's exactly what I needed, because I scored a silver on that very next run.
Some of these - even in the "B license" tests - are going to be REALLY hard to score a Gold on.
Overall, I agree that it seems more like GT3.5 than a whole new version. I'm not as blown away as I'd hoped. Although there are obviously a lot of cars, there are a TON of them that I'm just not even interested in buying or driving. Some of the new tracks seem cool, and others I'm not impressed with.
It's a damn shame there's no online multiplayer.
I'm going to play the hell out of this one, but now I'm really looking forward to Forza Racing for Xbox.
