Looking to get a new notebook.

Well, I have a toshiba satellite now. It's been working great. It lasted over 3 years and I've beat the hell out of it so I say it's pretty rugged. My wife is always stealing it so it's time to give it to her and get myself a new one. I've been looking around and this is what I'm thinking of getting. What do you geek experts think?

I prefer the Meade Five-Star.

If you never try anything new, you'll miss out on many of life's great disappointments.

Re: Looking to get a new notebook.

anything and everything. I just want to be sure it'll handle anything I want and it will still be good three years from now. My wifes work buys it for her but can't go over $3,000 so this is the best sytem I found in that price range.

Re: Looking to get a new notebook.

So what you're saying is your wife is getting your old laptop, but her work is gonna buy you a $3k laptop?

EDIT: BTW, that seems like it should be able to handle most tasks, and then some

Re: Looking to get a new notebook.

basically. The old laptop is the one her work bought her 3 years ago. All she ever does is check email and look at a few web pages. I like gaming, burning dvd's, video editing, and more so I'm the one who needs the upgrade, I'm just happy she could care less about computers!!!

Re: Looking to get a new notebook.

I can't speak for the system you mentioned, but I can tell you that I have never been more impressed with a notebook computer than my current Acer TravelMate 8000. This thing absolutely RIPS. It's thin, powerful, fast and has loads of cool features. I did a lot of research before the purchase six months ago and it was rated at or near the top in the all-purpose category (and still is from what I've seen). You might want to check the Acers out.

Re: Looking to get a new notebook.

It's worth it for the FREE Alienware t-shirt!!

Sounds like to me that this will do everything that you want it to do with no problem. Only thing I wouldn't like about it is the size of it...a 17" laptop is a lot to carry around YMMV

Re: Looking to get a new notebook.

I don't carry it around much. I'm a contractor so no need for pc at work. Just use it for long trips to watch dvd's and being able to use it sitting in my lazyboy is the main reason I want a notebook. I'll check out the acer models.

Re: Looking to get a new notebook.

Are you certain that Alienware (or X Laptops) will be around next year when it goes on it's ass?

You may spend a bit more money, but I recommend staying with a first tier product, as I have a dumpster load of no-name notebooks and desktops sitting in my shop that have no possibility of ever running again due to the fact that the friggin companies have gone out of business and parts/support/service is no longer available. The desktops are a lot easier to retrofit aftermarket parts, but with most notebooks, you're on your own . . .

and your girlfriend too.

Re: Looking to get a new notebook.

so you're saying I'd be better sticking with a company like toshiba or dell or something?

Re: Looking to get a new notebook.

I thought that Alienware had been quite popular for a few years now, especially with the gaming community However, I didn't even know they had laptops until you posted about getting one.
