IBM/Hitachi Deskstars hard drives
I am starting to form an opinion. I usually buy drives that cost a little more and have a warranty for 3 to 5 years. This limited me to IBM hard drives and Western Digital Special Edition drives. Then recently Seagate went and made across the board all drives as 5 year warranty.
In the past 5 years I have had 2 Deskstars fail 2 years through the 3 year warranty.
This morning I lucked out with my drive failure as I run raid/mirroring and have an exact duplicate of my data. I have 2 western digital se drives just a bit older that are still humming away in my server though.
BTW I run a home server so run drives for months or years of use. I am starting to agree with what others say "to stay away from deskstars"
I am kinda kicking myself now as I recently bought a 7200 rpm 40gb fluid bearing travelstar (IBM) for my laptop. I do love how my laptop boots up incredibly fast...well for a laptop.
