Political correctness loses again

Quote:
Officials did not say what measures were taken to beef up security, but said deputy Cynthia Hall was alone when she escorted Nichols to his retrial on rape and other charges Friday. Law requires that defendants not be handcuffed as they enter the courtroom to make sure the sight of cuffs doesn’t unfairly influence the jury
I stole this from some online news report about the Atlanta slayings. What kind of ridiculous BS is this.

I'm just glad they caught him today... Believe me, he had plenty of security today.

Re: Political correctness loses again

here is a question to ponder - this thing was on the news here for 24 hours STRAIGHT. how is he going to get a fair jury trial NOW?? the jury pool has been biased against him since the news said he did it

What exactly do you expect?

I mean, c'mon man, we live in the Electronic Age... 24-hour news networks, the Internet at our collective fingertips, etc. None of this is new.

Just because something gets covered non-stop by the various media doesn't mean you can't find 12 unbiased citizens in a city the size of Atlanta to hear the evidence and render a verdict.

I wish more people were concerned about the victims' rights in this case (four innocent people now lay dead with another in critical condition) rather than a guy who, by all independent eyewitness accounts, is a cold blooded murderer.

I agree with you Skully, it's crap. Unfortunately for the dead judge, his court reporter, two slain law enforcement officers and their collective families and friends, it takes this sort of tragedy for the policy pens to be broken out anew.

A sad commentary on the state of the nation, but so very true...

Ask the families of the 4 murdered innocent people that same question.

It's amazing how stupid some people can be.

Re: Political correctness loses again

Does it somehow make it an unfair trial if everyone knows (I mean REALLY knows, not just speculation) he murdered these people in cold blood? Does it make any difference at all, in a fair trial, that the jury knows he murdered these people?
I think it's fairer in this case than a case where some psychiatrist hypnotizes an adult to convince this adult that he was raped 45 years ago. Then let some trailer people listen to an attorney’s double talk, convincing them to convict someone they REALLY have no (as in ZERO) proof that a crime was even committed?
A bit far fetched but still comparable. Obvious is obvious. Bubba, in way more than 99% of the time, I would agree with you. But not on this trial.

BTW, why in HELL was a Woman ushering a Man into the courtroom?

There is video of parts of it. Also it sounds like there was a chain of mishaps that led up to this. I have to question the deputies procedure for uncuffing him though Either way it sucks that folks died and good that they have him back in a cage so he cannot continue.

6th Amendment: Constitution of the United States
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein...

Somehow I think that amendment did not have the scope to even imagine that the accused would shoot the judge and several others in the courtroom. I think they should use the same jury as before. He has shown his true colors inside the courtroom. Assign a new judge keep the jury and continue the case with additional charges. Although this case is well outside the scope of the Sixth Amendment it is definitely not in violation of it. Because he did it inside the courtroom, the original jury should stay. And speedy trial it is; I dont' see the jury needing much time for this one.
