SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Apparently angered when the bag he snatched from a woman's hand contained dog waste, a gunman took aim at her canine and pulled the trigger twice, but no bullets came out, San Diego police said Tuesday.
The attack happened at about 7:50 p.m. Monday as the woman walked her dog - - named Misty -- in the 4100 block of Monroe Avenue in City Heights, San Diego police spokesperson Gary Hassen said.
A would-be robber ran up from behind and grabbed a bag from the woman's hand, Hassen said. The woman turned around and saw that the man was holding a gun in one hand and the bag -- which she had been using to pick up the dog's excrement -- in the other.
The gunman opened the bag, then threw it to the ground, Hassen said.
The man held his gun to the woman's chest and demanded money several times, Hassen said. Each time, the woman said she didn't have any.
The man then pointed his gun at Misty and pulled the trigger twice, but the weapon didn't discharge, Hassen said.
The gunman fled in a small silver car with another person and remained at large today, he said.
He was described by police as a Latino in his 20s, about 5 feet 8 inches, with a stocky build, mustache and sideburns, Hassen said. He was wearing a red baseball cap, a dark sweatshirt and shorts and tennis shoes.
Anyone with information about the crime was asked to call San Diego police at (619) 531-2000.
