Had to put a dog down.

She was a Wamareimer about 1.5 yoa. We got her about 9 month ago from a buddy that bought her and could not put up with her. She actually destroyed his landscape in 2 hours, Trees and all as a pup. Igot her and was making good progress with her. Last night she ran off and refused to come home when called and had to go get her on the next street and still she refused to listen to me. I had to keep on getting on to her, she would find other stuff she wanted to do besides listen to me. We got to the house and she knew she had been bad and she immediately went to her kennel. I took her by the collar and went to spank her, she then twisted around and bit me just below the wrist and sank all 4 K9's in my arm as deep as they would go. I refuse to have a biting dog as I have 2 kids and the neighborhood we live in has alot of kids that play around the streets and I do not want any of them hurt. She was put down last night.

Now today I went to the doctor and have to go to a specialist for numbness in my hand. She apparently bit into my ulna nerve and I cannot feel my left ring finger or the pinky finger. The ulna nerve is the same nerve that is connected to the funny bone.

I hated to put her down but I would not feel right if she bit someone else.

It's amazing how stupid some people can be.

Re: Had to put a dog down.

Wow, tough decision but I agree with it. Sounds like she had a hard life before you. Not much you can do about it and it may have been something that stayed with her forever. I guess the only other thing would maybe try to find her another home with a person that takes troubled dogs... Tough. Glad it wasn't any of your kids that got bit though.

Re: Had to put a dog down.

You have my deepest sympathies, brother.

It's a shame, but some dogs are beyond our abilities. I had a lab/shepherd mix that had a stroke. Had to put him out of his misery.

I know it's a little different than what you experienced, but it's really hard either way.

That sucks dude

Once a dogs bitten someone its all over. Had a mate with a staffy, beautiful dog, placid as anything. One day it walked next door and for no reason went his nextdoor neighbours kids. My mate saw the whole thing. It was completely unprovoked. By the time the kid got back from the hospital Nunnsa had killed the dog. Cant keep em once they've had a smell of it.

Never heard of a Weimariemer before. What are they like?

EDIT: My firewall is being a tool and I cant see your pic.

A weimeraner is going to be my next dog, lovely dogs, very loyal, mate at works mate breeds them and is one of the top breeders in Oz.
Real shame about having to put her down, but better you than a child, imagine that bite on a smaller wrist, you did the right thing.
I would be having a chat to this friend of yours you got the dog from, probably didn't treat her right when she was a pup.

Go out and get another grey ghoust, you'll be glad you did

Re: Had to put a dog down.

Lovely looking dog, shame about the character. You did the right thing, Hammer, but you'll feel guilty because you had to take the decision. That injury doesn't sound exactly trivial, and you know what could have happened with a child. Commiserations.

Bummer, but you did the right thing. If you hadn't and your kids got bitten next, you'd never forgive yourself.

Re: Had to put a dog down.

With kids you CAN NOT take the chance of the dog biting them. I think you made the right choice even though it doesn't feel right.

Without a doubt you did the right thing. Your family's safety must come first over a pet.

Re: Had to put a dog down.

I had a golden retriever/ chow mix that i loved had him for 3 years and he was a great dog then he got food agressive and i cant have that either I have a 5 year old daughter and she loved him too and he was good with her. then she was trying to play with him while he was eating and he growled at her. so for the next three weeks everytime he would eat i would go over to him and stick my hands in his bowl and pet him and just mess with him and he would snap at me and growl and when he did i smacked him and said no any other time he was the model dog...obediant, faithful, playful..just when he was eating. well at one point i was making good progress, he had stopped growling and snapping but i kept on it and that faithful day he bit the crap out of me and damn near took my thumb off so i promptly went inside and grabbed my gun and put him down before my daughter got home. then went to the hospital. that was 2 yrs ago and i finally started getting the numbness to go away in my thumb.

I feel your pain man but i dont regret what i did if he had bittin my little girl at all i would have lost my mind she was little enough back then that he could have gotton her right in the face.

I dont know what brought it out in him either had him since he was about a year old and i got him from a military family that was moving to Iceland and could not take him.

Re: Had to put a dog down.

Dog murderer. You have no right to take the life of a living, feeling individual. You abused that poor animal and infringed on it's personal space and territory. You deserved to be bitten.
You could have sent that animal to a sanctuary for rehabilitation but instead you chose to take a life you had no right to take.
