Annoying printer problem

I have a color printer that I'm getting ready to throw out the window. My black was not printing, so yesterday I bought and replaced the cartridge. The test page will print just fine with every color, but if I print any other type of document the black will not print. I've aligned the cartidges, cleaned them, checked the Canon website (which told me to change, align and clean the cartidges), and even uninstalled and reinstalled the printer. Anyone have any other ideas?

Re: Annoying printer problem

A simple check would be to verify the operating system and printer are working with a good drive. With the printer turned on and connected to the PC go to the Windows update page and see if Windows detects that you need any updated hardware drivers, if so download and install it. I did this for my father in laws Epson printer which had a similar issue and it corrected the problem.

Re: Annoying printer problem

I just checked for updates and was told I don't need any. Good suggestion, though. Thanks.

Re: Annoying printer problem

I would bet it isn't a hardware issue. It sounds like this is a software problem. Have you tried printing text from more than one source (ie notepad, wordpad, MS word). How about if you print a picture with color and black in the picture? What is the outcome?

Re: Annoying printer problem

I've tried printing text from several programs. If I print a picture it comes out fine except there's nothing where black should be. For example, if I were to print a picture of a leopard, his spots would be white.

Re: Annoying printer problem

Sorry but then it does sound to me like a printer (hardware) problem. What type of Canon printer is it? Canon has some excellent printers that can do text and photo quality for under $100. This may be the best option depending on what type you currently have. The next step I would think for your failing printer would be to replace the printer head. Which varies in price but it normally around $50.

Re: Annoying printer problem

It's a Canon i850s. I was afraid a new printer would be the only answer to this. I'll call Canon support tomorrow morning. Thanks!!

Re: Annoying printer problem

The i850 is a nice printer. I hope it's not anything big to fix it.

You saying the windows test page, or the printers (built-in test mode) page?

I am thinking one thing to try (just for diag. really) is the typical remove/kill/slash/burn the thing from your machine, shut down, restart, and re-install it completely. Thats just to isolate the fact that Windoze isn't stonde, err, stonde at that moment anyways.

Next thing I'd try (realizing this has zero to do with hardware) is go get a PDF printing program and see if black is showing up there. I know it sounds weird but I think there is a way to permanently change a color profile for printing permanently per machine, but not sure

why put off today what you can wake up late and forget to do tomorrow.

In the back of my mind I thought there was a way to print black only in 'doz so you could do a two pass print (color then black). Not sure if I am right but if so the option might be on.

There is a way to do that with older printers, but only because the printers only took 1 cartridge and you'd have to swap it, ugh.

..not a disagreement, just a randomly uselessly informative statement, sorta...

Re: Annoying printer problem

i used to work for epson tech support.

1. do a test page throught the printer. some combination of holding or pressing the buttons. if that works then..

2. test page through windows. ctrl panel, printers , right click on the printer, properties, then print test page. if that works then you know it's probably the drivers, or even the printer settings under properties.

do those first

Re: Annoying printer problem

Nice pic, Z! Thanks for all of the ideas. I'll try them all this evening when I get home. I've had this printer hooked up to two computers now and had the same problem with both computers. When I make test pages to check for alignment my black will print just fine. Thanks again....
