Vegas Baby

Only a few months ago I could be heard to say that Las Vegas would be the last place I'd want to take a holiday. I had an image of sleaze, excess, crime and filth in my head.

When my girlfriend's mom offered to send the two of us to Las Vegas for her birthday, I was immediately thrilled at the prospect of a (mostly) free holiday, but silently wishing it would be someplace else.

I posted on this site looking for ideas on how to spend my time in Vegas. Many of you responded, most notably BDA116, with scores of ideas and suggestions. I am glad to say that I used much of the advice I was offered here, and I had a great time. I no longer think of Vegas as a sleazy gambling and sex cesspool... It is a great city and a great place for a holiday. I plan on going back.

Here's how our trip went:

Thursday night:

Arrive exhausted in Las Vegas after many airline delays and general air travel bullshit. It was about 11pm by the time we made it to Excalibur. It is an impressive hotel / casino, and the location was perfect but it wouldn't be my first choice next time. It's showing signs of wear and could use an overhaul.

First initial impressions:

Traffic is insane. We found this out immediately on our 80mph taxi ride to the hotel. Any ideas I had about renting a car evaporated instantly. I was not interested in driving here.

HOly **** it's hot there. 100+ degree heat the entire time. A small-town western Canadian boy like me is not accustomed to this type of heat. It might get this hot for 2-3 days in the summer here in Calgary, and that's usually accompanied by thunderstorms. I'm not used to goin in a building to cool off. Usually I'm getting in a building to warm up.

Took our first walk down the strip at night in a trip that would see us walking about 20 miles in total. It was very overwhelming. I felt like if I had a year and a billion dollars to spend there I still wouldn't be able to do / see everything. So many billions spend and so much effort just to entertain people. And we were thoroughly entertained.

The worst part of the trip, and one of the only let-downs: dirtbags on the sidewalk shoving stripper pamphlets in my (and in my girlfriend's) face. **** OFF!

Friday:

Excalibur breakfast buffet. Not bad, not great but definitely a great value for ten bucks each.

Walked to the fashion show mall north of Caesars Palace, made plenty of stops along the way, sunburned my shoulders. My fair Canadian skin hasn't seen that much sun since college. Jessica wore strappy heels and mutilated her feet. She would spend the rest of the weekend nursing about 12 blisters. Oops. Took a cab home.

Went back to the Bellagio in the evening for Cirque Du Soleil "O". We went there early and took in the gourmet buffet ($36 each) which was spectacular and well worth the money.

"O" was amazing.... but.... some other members here had given it so much hype that I was almost a bit let down. I enjoyed their smaller travelling show that came to Calgary last summer a little more, but this was because I went in to it with no preconceptions. Still, it was worth the $250 I paid for tickets and I would recommend it to anyone.

Saturday:

Spent a few hours laying by the pool, drank a few beers, had a buffet lunch. Oh by the way, do I even have to mention that American beer tastes like cold watered-down piss? I drank a bottle of something vaguely resembling beer called "Bud Light". I think I'd need to chug about 16 of these sorry bottles of piss to get a mild buzz. Walked around the strip, went to the Ferrari Gallery at the Wynn, lion habitat at the MGM Grand, and generally just took in the scenery and weather. Went shopping at the outlet mall, picked up some cheap gifts. TOok in the Excalibur Medieval dinner show. I've seen something similar in Toronto and have the same general impression: The acting and story were extremely lame but the horses and stunts were excellent. Not really worth the 54 dollars each but would be great for kids.

Sunday:

More lounging by the pool, (this is a huge novelty for people that are accustomed to minus 40 and blizzards) lunch at the burger bar at Mandalay, then Celine at Caesars Palace. I'm not a Celine Dion fan per se, but Jessica is her biggest fan (well, second biggest fan after the obnoxious Quebecer seated next to us) and this was her trip after all. The show was very awe-inspiring and entertaining, and guys, if your wife drags you there there's a good chance you'll probably enjoy yourself. I decided I wanted to see Fremont street, so I thought we'd walk from Caesars Palace. Turns out is wasn't so close to Caesars. We made it to Stratosphere (which is a huge rip-off) before we gave up and took a cab home.

Monday:

Another buffet breakfast, more walking of the strip / shopping, then toured the Luxor and Mandalay, and checked out the very cool aquarium. Took an early afternoon flight home to 45 degrees after 105 in Phoenix.

Even though nobody read this far, thanks for the suggestions. I will definitely come back to Las Vegas. Pics to follow.

And then there's this asshole...

I read that far and for a REAL experience come to the deep south in August for some only 95 degree days with humidity to match (vs the 10% you had)

Re: Vegas Baby

At least you had fun. As for the 100+ degree days of wonderful southwest air, welcome to my world. Like they say here in AZ..."It's a DRY heat!" To which I always reply, "An oven is a dry heat too and you cook **** in it...hmmm!" Vegas is a place I have never been and would love to visit just to see it in real life. You get so many pre conceptions from seeing it in movies and on TV.

Re: Vegas Baby

I read your whole post!!!!

I love Vegas and I love gambling!!!!!

I don't love the constant smokey environment in the casinos (even when you go to the non-smoking section). Being a FORMER smoker myself for many years, I would think I could tolerate the smoke. Nope I can't!!!! I end up with nose bleeds by the 2nd night I'm there.

Glad you had fun and glad to hear you'll be going back!!!!

Re: Vegas Baby

As far as the climate, I'm used to the (lack of) humidity. Southern Alberta is a desert climate also, just not as hot. Nosebleeds / chapped lips not an issue. High humidity kills me. I lived in southern Ontario for 2 years and 90 degrees with humidity feels way hotter than 105 with none.

Sheep: the deep south is likely our next vacation destination. Jessica is very much a civil war history / Gone With the Wind buff. That or Hawaii.

Re: Vegas Baby

We go every year and spend a week. I love vegas! But we sleep during the day and go out at night. No crowds, no traffic, no heat and no lowlifes. But the hookers are out and the beggars. We usually put 600-800 miles on the rental car, day trips to L.A. , arizona, etc. Mt. charleston was very nice!

Re: Vegas Baby

Get it straight, they are call girls, not stirppers Sounds like you had a good time in Vegas. Your right about never being able to see it all. And thats good because its something new everytime you go. My favorate part about Vegas??? You can have pretty much a good time no matter the "theme" of your visit. Crazy, drunken night with the boys, Hell ya! Fun with old lady, you bet. Entertain your hell spawn, can do.
