Brian Redman crash at Road America

Ouch! Look at the cars involved in this crash. I guess everyone walked away too.

Rumor has it that the pace car was going way too fast. The back of the pack got separated on the warm up lap and were trying to catch up to the rest of pack. The starter did not wave the green flag, so the front of the field slowed down, while the back of the field was already close to race speed trying to catch up. They crested the hill on the front straight and started piling in on the front pack.

See the rest of the pics and story here.

Re: Brian Redman crash at Road America

Wow, the pace car driver must have completely botched the procedures. They must have been depending on the correct behaviour from the pace car. What a waste!!

Nope, but I've got a fascinating presentation on modern Russia's auto industry I'd be happy to loan you.

Re: Brian Redman crash at Road America

As someone who stands on the track every weekend, blaming the pace car driver seems way off to me. I watch every week as stragglers with a heavy right foot decide to pick up the slack they have left, only to find themselves going way too fast when the green isn't tossed at the exact second they think it should. That the pace car went too fast is laughable. They should have just kept up, it's their job, and they should be relatively focused at that point, so leaving a huge gap is no ones fault but their own.

This picture is just the risk you take in my opinion putting a car of any kind on a racetrack. It's also the reason I don't feel too overly eager to take my 929 to a trackday.

would you rather have a 75 Chevy or a 75 Toyota?

old american cars are cool even if the new ones basically suck.

if you can't convince them, confuse them.

Re: Brian Redman crash at Road America

I don't really know the dynamics of how the pace car would work in that situation. Most of my track experience has been on the track with my bike. I haven't really even observed how it works with a pace car. I wonder what the heck really went wrong. I'll have to check that link above and find out.

Re: Brian Redman crash at Road America

Usually the pace car peels off the track at least halfway around the track before the actual racing begins. Plenty of time for the guys to get their act together.
