Work is a PITA now

So last night I started my 12s 3 days a week, 8pm to 8 am. It was harder than i expected. I was tired and groggy all night, but my boss said everyone goes through it there first week. its not good to be sleepy when you are working on 5 million dollars in machines . have to be to work again in 2 hours to go through it again. it will be nice to have 4 days off though. this will just take some time to get used to.

I did that shift for 6 years. Screws up your internal clock, so I wouldn't recommend you do it for long. It sucked, but it payed the bills.

As long as you have a junior there, you can blame everything on him.

Re: Work is a PITA now

I can relate totally. I was on night shift 6pm to 6am for the first two years I was at my present job and it can get tedious when you're on hour 11 and trying to troubleshoot electrical problems while needing to have power applied and you slip... But on the up side the shock wakes you up real quick.
You'll get used to it.
I am just glad I got promoted quick and got to day shift. It becomes nice to be awake and be able to do **** during the day again instead of sleeping thru most of it and staying up all night every night.

Re: Work is a PITA now

i asked to do this shift. i get an extra $1 an hour and only work have 3 days so i thought i would give it a try. its gonna take time to get used to.

I work for Opex, a mail extraction company. I am a tech for the machines there. as long as i dont slip and hit a 240 3-phase, i should be alright.

Re: Work is a PITA now

They used to have the Baylor shift (sp) for nurses at the hospital I worked at. You worked 8 hours at night on Friday. Then 12's on Sat and Sun. You got paid for 40 hours. People killed for that shift...and I would've too. (if I was a nurse)

I'll take a hit from 240 or 480 VAC over 180 VDC any day.

Avoid going back to 100% normal hours on the off days. When NASA does swing shifts for flights they make people change gradually as they found that wild swings made people sick more often.

4-10 hour shifts are best, but 3 12's are a close second. Many PD's use these as well. I prefer the night shift, and the key is to keep with it on your days off within a few hours.

Re: Work is a PITA now

most FDs around here to 2 24s. But they do 24 on 24 off 24 of 5 days off. A couple do 10 and 14 hours shifts. But atleast they get chances to sleep at night while working. Except if you're the new guy who hasn't gone to the academy yet then you gotta do dispatch and stay awake the whole 24 hours.

good luck with it, you're still young and should be able to get used to it. and once you get used to it you should have more time for the kiddies.

if you can't convince them, confuse them.

Re: Work is a PITA now

3 days a week I would love that, I work 7 Days a Week from 10 to 12 hours a day for 6 weeks strait, then I get two weeks off. The keys is keeping a positive attitude and build a routine then the days just fly by and before you know you are 30
