Re: New iPods

2.5" isn't exactly all that big, not for videos. There are better "video" player solutions. I like the ipod nano, even if ipods are just trendy devices. But the ipod video is not my thing.

Be fast or be last.

Re: New iPods

Yeah, extra capacity would be cool. Looks like they understand their market better. The gym crowd which wants a tiny little player with a nice interface, fidelity not so important.

Then the more serious people, that use lossless formats, and want lots of music (more capacity).

I chose the 30Gp photo over the 20 as 10Gb for $50 with the nice color interface was a bargain IMO.

...in bed.

Re: New iPods

Although not peculiar to Apple (there's that word again), it's all digital and makes me want to kill someone after listening to it for more than 45 seconds . . . Sorry, but the FI is so low, my Music on hold blows it away . . .

and your girlfriend too.

I have a hard time imagine you stirred let alone homicidal

But imagine:
You are in a 4 person cube with lots of people arguing and talking around you trying to code, the choice is medium fidelity Marilyn Manson or hard drive hum with the nice ambient noises.

I love my iPod

Re: New iPods

Yeah, an iPod of course will never compete with good master tapes or vinyl, but it's pretty hard to carry that stuff with you to work, on an airplane, the gym etc etc. Places I must have music to alleviate boredom.

The lossless digital formats are getting pretty good.

An iPod blows away creative in the fidelity department. Of course, the vast majority can't tell. Sometimes I think they're lucky.

You haven't spent any time with me in a car when someone turns on the radio, or you wouldn't say that. I'll take pure analog HD hum or the 130 some fans I have in the DC to anything digital, even Marilyn Manson. Digital isn't medium fidelity (although it could be), the iPod is barely up to the lowest cheeseball noname CD players that retail for under 29.00 in terms of playback quality (MP3 is a full order of magnitude better and it sucks so badly I wouldn't use it for an encoded ransom message) and humans are analog structures that don't respond well to TIM distortion levels exceeding 20% and rise times that are blunted before they reach 50% of their amplitude.

and your girlfriend too.

Doesn't need to be vinyl or master tapes. We have a few FM stations around here that still use xcarts transferred from LPs for 99% of the playlist. Their numbers are all in the first 6 selections on my tuner . . .
