Screw this. I'm cutting my wrists.

Actually, I'm having a doctor do it in early December, if not earlier.

I was tested for carpal tunnel last year, and the doctor who administered the test said I had so much nerve damage (that'll teach me to suffer in silence) that an operation wouldn't do anything for me.

In the ensuing year, I lost a lot of feeling in my fingers, and lost a lot of sleep, being frequently awakened by pain, particularly after riding, playing guitar (whch I've nearly given up), and wrenching. Just the **** I love, that's all.

So shame on me for waiting so long, but I got a second opinion today, and this guy thinks that I'd benefit by an operation, so Dec 9th I get cut, unless someone cancels out before that.

Doing the throttle/brake hand first.

Anyone else have this operation? How long was your recovery? How much relief/increased functionality did you experience?

Re: Screw this. I'm cutting my wrists.

My ex-wife had it done a long time ago, but the condition returned. Dunno if they have better procedures these days that make it last longer.

Re: Screw this. I'm cutting my wrists.

Remember - up the road, not across the street.

Yeah, my wife had one hand done ~15 years ago now, and she's pretty much fine.
Just like anything, shop around. It's not like we have socialist dictated health care where you take what you can get when they say you can have it.
Find a good doc, and like Conq said, there's got to be better procedures now than there were 15 years ago.

My dad had it done a long time ago, I thought that I may have to follow in his footsteps as my hands were doing the same thing...turned out I just needed a couple of months at the chiropractor, cleared it right up...Something to consider before going under the knife?

Canada post has came and gone, now they are coming again ...

Yup, I've had both hands done in the last 12 months. PM me if you want to know specifics, but it really has helped me. I'm only a year out on my right hand so I have no idea how long (or if forever) it will last, but It was well worth the pain and hassle.

I wish you hadn't posted those pics!

One question before the PM's-- can you ride without pain?

Re: Screw this. I'm cutting my wrists.

Quote:
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful progressive condition caused by compression of a key nerve in the wrist. It occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. Symptoms usually start gradually, with pain, weakness, or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm. As symptoms worsen, people might feel tingling during the day, and decreased grip strength may make it difficult to form a fist, grasp small objects, or perform other manual tasks. In some cases no direct cause of the syndrome can be identified. Most likely the disorder is due to a congenital predisposition - the carpal tunnel is simply smaller in some people than in others. However, the risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome is especially common in those performing assembly line work.

Yes...after a few months. Its a good 6-8 months before you can put alot of pressure on your palm, like if you were doing a pushup. But riding, I was good to go in 5-6 weeks or so for short jaunts. Just had to use my back more to keep pressure of my wrist.

Exactaly, like if you sit on your leg or arm too long and it does "dead", then the pins and needles feeling. It starts in your pinky and ring finger, and spreads to your whole hand. On the race track, it got to the point where my hand felt so "dead" i could not feel the grip at all, could not feel myself pulling the front brake lever, etc. You have no idea if your even holding on at all. Some people get alot of pain with it as well, others not so bad.

Re: Screw this. I'm cutting my wrists.

CBRVFR: For the sleeping, go buy some CTS wrist braces NOW, any good drug storse will have them, and start wearing them at night. I did that for a good 2 years before my surgeries and its helps alot. Without them, I always curl up in a position that agrivates my wrists and would wake me up with a dead hand and pain. They will take a week or two to get used to them, but its good training for when you have to sleep with the cast on after surgery.

Hmmm, as much joking around as I do, I dont find this too amusing, thats kind of scary actually. I'm only 24 but I noticed that exact feeling at work last week, and it wasnt the first time.

Well, the Michigan winters will enforce a rest period of 5-6 months before the first track days will be scheduled... But I can't wait to ride without that distracting pain.

Google the subject.. there are exercises you can do to try to alleviate it, and see a doctor soon. I waited 10 years, and lost a lot of muscle tissue in the base of my thumbs. I won't know for a year or so if the loss will be permanent..
