Calling all Geeks, quick question

Buddy of mine bought an e-machines computer 2 years ago. Last year the HD went out and seems to be doung the same thing now. He did get a 3 year warranty on it so it is covered under warrantybut more than likely will loose all the info that he had stored on it. He thinks that the HD is an AMD. Is this a cheap POS HD? Would it be advisable to upgrade the HD to a pentium? If so how would you convince the Geek Squad to do this, he is willing to pay the difference? Please help, I am going with him to Best Buy because I know more about computers than him, and I know nothing.

It's amazing how stupid some people can be.

Re: Calling all Geeks, quick question

Hammer, the computer is a magic box isn't it?

Intel and AMD make microprocessors, the electronic component that does the processing of data. They have no moving parts, except for maybe a fan on the heatsink.

The hard drive is what stores data. It will be made by companies like Seagate, Western Digital, IBM, etc etc. If it is toast, yes, your friend lost all of his data.

e-machines are the biggest piles of in computerdom. Don't buy them.

I did not lie whan I said that I knew nothing about computers.

He said that when he logs in it starts to shut down and is making a louder than normal hum almost like something is hitting something in there.

As far as not buying one, he bought it about 2 years ago so the damage is already done.

What suggestions do you have after the fact, short of buying a whole new computer.

It's amazing how stupid some people can be.

E-Machines aren't so bad now, since they're basically Gateway. The older ones may have been worse though...

Re: Calling all Geeks, quick question

If he gets a new hard drive, tell him to buy a Seagate Barracuda. It's a little more expensive than the others, but it's better than the doorstop of a Western Digital that's likely in there and it comes with a 5yr warranty.

Re: Calling all Geeks, quick question

um, indiana, eh? call this guy

www.walterpc.com

I work with him, i've never met a crazier geek than him. He builds budget pc's, and most of the part's he'll use will set you up with a 5 yr waranty. he can build a pc you'd buy at BB for 2500, for roughly 900-1200. His budget pc's are cheaper, and if you don't need anything like a monitor, they are much cheaper. I would send you a list of parts to buy to build your own, but yeah, if you don't know, that would be difficult.

I would think that the pc is shot, and would upgrade, but that's me. None the less, he's a great guy, and know's his ****. call him for some advice.

Re: Calling all Geeks, quick question

Thanks for thae help. He has the warranty and still has one year still on it. We brought it to BB and the Geek Squad could not even get it to boot up but the fan on the inside would not shut off unless the plug was pulled. He left it with them, don't know how long it will be till he gets it back. He mostly uses it for I-net and digital camera pics. It does havea cool port on the front of it that accepts all cards for dig cameras that is pretty neat. I told him to get an external HD, and put all his important data on there so if this happens again he will have some of his data atleast. He has alot of his pics on CD's though. Mojo I am looking myself at getting a desktop built in the near future, this laptop is getting old. Built in 99' and is running win 98 so alot of the new programs will not work with it. I will give him a ring when I am ready to build a new computer for me.

It's amazing how stupid some people can be.

If thats really the case, then the data on the HD can probably be recovered and the HD may not even be bad at all. Im personally blaming Windows for that one.
