If it's for work, your boss should pay for it

Re: Need to buy a Laptop for work, how much is deductable?

I'm not a professional tax preparer, but unless you're a contractor, it is not deductable.

I know an engineer trying to write off a laptop purchase with personal funds would find himself in an audit in short order.

Anytime you get to write something off it is based on your personal tax bracket.

The write off would probably be pretty small for you, again, incurring the risk of audit.

If it's for work, try to get your work to reimburse you a portion. Much safer, better choice.

If it's making things easier, therefore more efficient.... more money for your boss, he should pay for it. If that's the situation and he's smart he'll buy you one. The company I use to work for bought me one, the thing was 7000$, but is was quite easy to have them pay for it when I showed them we would save 10 times that amount only on one contract we had.

And your company gets to depreciate the laptop from their taxes.

Then actually you might be able to.

Still, ask an expert.

Off topic: But buy the smallest labtop (12" screen) that you can. Also make sure to get one that has the best battery life. if you are looking for something that has a bug screen and is fast just get a desktop. people forget what labtops are for and get large screens and a non mobile CPU.

You'll thank me your first flight

aloha

Re: Need to buy a Laptop for work, how much is deductable?

I don't think Stegen travels much.

I do, and picked the smallest, lightest Centrino chipset laptop I could find, and filled up the RAM slots. My screen doesn't make sickening crunching sounds when the person in front of me in coach reclines. I couldn't even tell you what speed the processor is, I couldn't have cared less. I also went to a backpack over a laptop "satchel". Best decision I've ever made for travel gear. I don't look the coolest in a suit with backpack, but my shoulders are the least sore in the room.

The mobile desktop definately has applications. Our IT dept all have large screened laptops, so they can move them around inside the building. Our product engineering teams, who live in meetings, also have large laptops to carry meeting to meeting. It works.

Before long people won't need them though. Memory sticks with OS installed are the future of mobile computing.

I your hair are still red, I don't think that the back pack is what makes you look cool in a suite

Naw, hasn't been red for a long time. Maybe for Christmas. That should get my GF's family worked up.
