Tailgates and truck MPG revisited

I didn't get to see it, but apparently Myth Busters did a test (last night?) with identical Ford trucks equipped with cruise control and driven on the exact same route at the same time to see which one ran out of gas first...the one with the tailgate up or the one with the tailgate down.

The truck with the tailgate up won.

The testers concluded leaving the tailgate up creates a bubble of air that wind rushing over the top of the cab passes by at speed. Putting the tailgate down causes the bubble to be disrupted, negatively affecting the truck's Cd.

Our first discussion...

I could have saved them the trouble. This is a known fact at GM and has been for years.

Re: Tailgates and truck MPG revisited

Did the Myth guys repeat the test, swapping the tailgate positions to eliminate the possibility that the trucks were not truly identical in their fuel efficiency or tank capacity? Or did they take the first result because it supported their preassumed conclusion? These guys show too much disregaurd for scientific follow-through for me to trust at face value; and I didn't see the show so can't comment on this one, just curious.

Personally, I have never seen a benefit to having the tailgate down, mostly because the theories put forth didn't match well with my understanding of fluid flow. I'd like to see a definitive test that can hold up to some scrutiny. Thanks.

Re: Tailgates and truck MPG revisited

I recall Conqsoft posting something maybe 2 or 3 year ago about this, they had pictures of a truck in a wind tunnel and they where testing every option... The result was the same, tail gate up won.
