A little computer help please???

Post 8,001 was supposed to be the unveiling of my new ride, but since I'll not be back on two wheels before spring 2007 (you read that right, it ain't happening this coming spring), I'm going to ping you gamers for some advice.

My SO's home crafted pc:

Win XP 2002 w/ SP2

1.79 GHz AMD Athlon

224MB DDR PC2700 RAM (oddly enough, I pulled the stick out to look it over and it's stamped 256MB Samsung...no clue why it only shows up as 224MB when I right-click My Computer and go to Properties...any notion what this is all about?!).

NVidia GeForce2 Integrated GPU

I have a couple open PCI slots and another RAM slot available. Oh, one more AGP slot too.

I'm considering purchasing these two items (not necessarily from Best Buy...perhaps newegg) and would like you guys to let me know if you think I'd be happy with the machine's performance for Call of Duty 1 & 2 after I do the upgrades...or do I not have enough processor to make a $250 investment worthwhile?

-and-

Your input is very much appreciated!

Thanks,

Chain

Re: A little computer help please???

Your memory question is answered by your integrated graphics statement.
It appears to have 32MB allocated to it from your RAM.

As for is it worth it? That is up to you. Do you want to / can you swing a completely new system at this point? Would you rather spend ~$250 or ~$???

Re: A little computer help please???

Hrmph. I never knew integrated video would/could "steal" from your RAM. Interesting stuff.

I guess the answer is, upgrading is the cheapest route by a wide margin so long as the 1.79 AMD is enough processor.

Whaddya think?

Hey BDA, do you think I'm overbuying with that 256MB GeForce or would I do just as well spending less on a card w/128 on it? Please don't misread that question. I'm not against spending the money. I just don't want to throw it away if a performance difference wouldn't be realized.

Re: A little computer help please???

going from 256- to a full 768 should help all 'doz functions including stability

Any shared memory setup is going to be a dog so the card will be a large improvement

www.crucial.com THE source for RAM needs. As far as the video card...is this the PC you use for your gaming?

Re: A little computer help please???

That card is lightyears ahead of your on-board. Is it worth it? I don't know, that's up to you to decide. How does the onboard video handle the graphics for the games you play? Is it choppy and horrible looking? If it seems to do ok, you can probably find a happy medium inbetween what your on-board and that Nvidia offers.

I would also check to see if the mother board in the PC has an AGP slot...if it does, then get an AGP card and not a PCI.

Re: A little computer help please???

Honestly Chain, if it were my situation, I would just get the 128MB card.
You should be fine with that setup playing a game, but my opinion is that you would be tossing money on the 256MB card unless you plan on swapping it to a new PC when you get one. But, you said you're in an AGP situation and most new systems and video cards are going PCI-E, and by the time you're ready to get the new system there will be better stuff most likely cheaper, so you'd still be wasting coinage.
Your current setup isn't "stealing" RAM, that is how it was designed. Pretty much all integrated setups do that.

Re: A little computer help please???

Thanks for the tips guys.

Yep ND, I've got a couple PCI slots open, no problem.

I reckon the 128 is the way to go then, BDA.

Re: A little computer help please???

Guys, one more question... if I add a new card, will the onboard video be overridden? I can't recall from the last time I did this...seems to me I didn't have to use a jumper or anything to bypass the onboard video...the machine just recognized the new card and the "bigger animal" prevailed.

Most newer motherboards will sense the additional video card and let the external one take over. If not, just look for the setting in the BIOS.
