Re: Strange (to me) laptop problem

I had an issue like this with my work laptop (Panasonic Toughbook) last year. Turns out the battery wasn't seated correctly. Took it off and put it back on and worked like a charm.

Re: Strange (to me) laptop problem

I am very happy with my dell, its nothing special just a web browser and I do my programming on it and never had a problem.

I can tell you Dell tech support is extremely inconsistant and not helpfull

Re: Strange (to me) laptop problem

Update*

After consulting Dell tech support I was told the following, followed by results:

A.) I need to update my BIOS
Result: Failed. Bios update tool says it is running on an unsupported system. They did not give me a reason as to why.

B.) My motherboard has gone bad
Result: I disagree and cant justify spending the money on a new motherboard.

C.) (Different person, second time contacting them) My battery is bad and I should replace it
Result: This doesnt make sense to me as my battery LED is not on while plugged into the AC adaptor. Also my battery charges fine while the laptop is on, and my laptop runs without problem on battery power.

Conclusion: I just wasted 90mins of my life and am going to extremly tired at work in the morning for now good reason. Not confident as to what is wrong, still looking for any help/suggestions (backed with logic)

Re: Strange (to me) laptop problem

A.) Inspiron 1100's have crossed my path 3 times (this being the third) in the past month with various problems, and I'm not even looking for problems anymore

B.) It sounds to me like its your switched power/charging board. For some reason it's lost it's mind and doesent acknowledge when you have a battery in. Thus when it has AC power it's "priority" is to Pc performance, to ensure that your PC gets the power it needs, and charging batteries is secondary. When you shut the PC off there is no priority option, so the circuit passes through any charging currents for the battery. Alledgedly regulating the charge to optimize the life of your li-ion cells - alledgely.
Sounds like yours took the red pill, so its either or instead of %/% to each. No idea what the part costs but if you can get it I'll put it in for you if you don't wanna take your laptop apart. I can field strip an inspiron 8100/8200 faster then the hold queue at dell, but thats not saying much I realize

C.)Advice: -Go to dells user forums and search, see what else comes up. More then likely you'll find the answer your looking for there. If you can find a part referenced - search for it on ebay and get it for 1/15 the cost of the local dell auth. parts store.

D.) If you want to try it yourself (the surgery) I can get you a breakdown and instructions too.

Good Luck

That's a hard one to disagree (disagreement is particularly suspicious when backed up by economy) with until you have a specific cause for your problem that contradicts this. Having worked on the helpdesk for Canon and a bunch of other brands, while the sequential troubleshooting information is fairly limited (and many techs are trained only to use those documents[sparingly]), it's rarely taken at face-value what a user has to say as it's most often imaginary. Particularly with laptops, if a user called in for a diagnosis and disagreed it becomes simply "Okay, well, have a nice day. Talk to you soon." If the tech is good and you keep calling back, he'll read the past call logs and cut to the chase- send it in, unless there's something better he knows.

Having also done laptop repair on NEC laptops, the normal procedure is to extract all internal boards, replace them with new and/or anything else flagged as bad, preform any recall service to the unit, and put it back together. If a particular feature isn't working like it's supposed to (as opposed to how the user thinks it should) it gets sent in for cranial extraction.

Re: Strange (to me) laptop problem

p.s. I've never sent a laptop into Dell and had it come back better then when I sent it. Often it is a trade scenario. Like the time I had a bad mouse /keyboard and I got "we also replaced your MoBo.." WHAT? I had Id'd the problem and was gonna fix it myself till I figured f-it I have the warranty why not...little did I know the replacement motherboard would heat glitch regularly and hose me.

That's good to know since my world resides on an 8200 Inspiron...

Sweet, thanks for the advice I'll look into it and possibly tap into your knowledge base when I reach the next step.
