speed cameras catch thousands in Ohio. Kiss it goodbye, guys.

While I think that speeding in a school zone is reprehensible, I hate this method of enforcement and revenue generation and regard it as a potentially dangerous intrusion.

When the other towns in Ohio hear that Akron wrote a half million dollars in fines in a few weeks, you guys are going to become the most photographed state in the union.

Speeding in a school zone is BAD as is speeding in a neighborhood

Of course in the USA we USED to have some rights, for instance free political speech, the right to bear arms and property rights not anymore. It seems we are loosing the right to face our accuser also. Do you honestly think a person can question the person that set the system up? Or check the hardware and software to make sure it is bug free (likely windoz so no worry there). Or examine the logs for the day to ensure stuff was correlated and calibrated correctly. Nope just pay up because machines never lie.

It's okay though. You need front plates to the ticketed. I don't even have front plates on my car... simply because it didn't come with plate holes OEM.

Re: speed cameras catch thousands in Ohio. Kiss it goodbye, guys.

I just got nailed last week... $110 down the drain.

It's absolutely ****ing criminal. People are slamming on their brakes for yellow lights here because if the camera hits you you get a $360 fine. And they like to put the mobile photo radar units in speed transition zones, especially the downhill ones.

To be honest, I agree with putting them in school zones. But school zones don't generate as much revenue as transition zone traps. What a disgusting repulsive ****ing criminal tax.

Ironically, British Columbia, traditionally a socialist / unionist stronghold banned photo "law enforcement" a few years ago. But then again their (property, income, and sales) taxes are way higher so you just pay it somewhere else.

I hate.

And then there's this asshole...

I remember the stoplight cameras shooting from the front since shooting from the rear requires a bit more precise timing based upon speed. And from the picture in the article, I believe both the radar unit and the camera is forward mounted.

Interesting. All the red light traps here shoot from behind. But they have to because we don't have front plates.

Don't assume you're safe without a front plate though!

Re: speed cameras catch thousands in Ohio. Kiss it goodbye, guys.

The way they got killed here after their brief appearance was quite simple. Go to court, plead not guilty and ask for a jury trial. When the state tries to prove without a shadow of a doubt that YOU were speeding, not just the CAR with a simple little picture, they lost every time.
Sure, they have photgraphic proof the car was there, and their system, that could have been misconfigured, took a picture of the license plate because it thought the car was speeding, but who was driving the car?
You don't have to prove you weren't, the state has to prove beyond any doubt you were.
Speed cameras are no longer legal enforcement in Utah.

Re: speed cameras catch thousands in Ohio. Kiss it goodbye, guys.

I don't know the legal status of Speeding cameras here in California... but I have a feeling we would have a minor revolt on our hands if the CHP or CalTrans really thought they were going to install these things. There are a few web sites out there that chronicle the destruction of gatso cameras in the UK... I think that would be nothing compared to what would happen here. Plus, we have firearms.

Red Light cameras have been illegal in San Diego for a few years now, thanks to a multi-pronged legal attack that killed them dead. My biggest beef with them is that they were placed in intersections where left hand turning traffic would back up into the intersection because of traffic congestion. The light would turn, and then snap pictures of all of the poor people stuck in the intersection. Also, the cameras were placed in areas where safety wasn't an issue, but where enough people sneaked through to ensure hefty revenue generation for the city.

The driver shouldn't enter the intersection until he/she can clear it, thus when the light changes, the driver is not in the intersection.

Most of the intersections I can think of that are like this are usually bordered by trolley tracks a few hundred feet away, like Harbor Drive. People are trying to get out of the airport, turn left, but in the meantime, the trolley is coming so the guard rails come down. Traffic has to stop, and the previously fast moving left hand traffic comes to a quick halt. The people in the intersection had no way to know this was going to happen.

The other scenario is where the lights are so hopelessy timed (like in Mission Valley at Qualcomm and Camino del Rio North) that the only way for people to EVER get a chance to get through is creep through, blocking traffic. It's a sad fact of how the lights are set up. You can "break the law" and get through the intersection in 10 minutes, or "follow the rules" and have it take at least 30. I am not embellishing this... some of these intersections are HORRIBLY deisgned.
