Need audio driver

OK, long story short I got nailed by a fukkin big virus attack earlier this week. I have my computer back up and running now with everything except the audio driver..

I need the AC '97 audio driver.

I searched the net and found it in many places but after downloading it 3 times and trying to load it I keep getting prompted to put the driver disk in so it can load the ALCXWDM.SYS file. I figured the downoad had everything but it must not. I get the exact same file I am guessing from every place I have tried so far.

I ran into this problem once before when I had to wipe my drive on an older computer but I bought a soundblaster card for it and installed it so it wasn't needed...

With Christmas I am not buying a new sound card for a couple weeks and would like to get my sound working for now at least thru the on board one.

Any of you more computer savvy people out there happen to have what I need or know where I can get the complete files I need?

Thanks and Have a great Christmas and New Year.

Re: Need audio driver

Is it onboard, or a separate card? AC97 is the chipset. But different vendors will integrate it differently. If it's on the mobo, post up the model and make. Same for separate.

Re: Need audio driver

it's integrated on the mobo... I think I am just gonna go buy another decent soundblaster card since I just opened cards from the parents and inlaws and got some a bit of extra cash sitting in my hand now.

thanks.

When you install these files, is there a temp directory where the files being uncompressed is stored? Note the path name.

Then when it asks you to install that sys file, navigate to that directory, and click on it. It should work.

If you don't know where the file is stored, you can do a search of your HDD.

Hit F3 in a Windows Explorer window, check the pop up pane at the left, and follow instructions.

Hope that solves it.

I have a similar problem - my onbrd sound card doesn't have a control panel for custom volume controls and surround sound options. very annoying. The mobo manufacturer doesn't post it, and soundmax doesn't let you download. The drivers I've found on the net, including the driverguide.com site, has the control panel components, but NEVER installs correctly, saying that the soundcard drivers aren't found. Very stupid.

Be fast or be last.
