Headers rule

So a couple weeks ago my car developed an exhaust leak. I thought it might have been the y pipe from the manifolds to the cat but it turns out it was the heat riser valve. So I had some headers laying around and figured I'd put them on. They didn't fit even though they were suppose to (says 82-92 Camaro/Firebird and g bodies). I think they only fit the f bodies cause they hit the frame in my g body Monte Carlo. So I ordered the Edelbrock Tubular Exhaust System (headers and y pipe). Got the ceramic coated ones. So after a week and a half of working on it after work for a couple hours a night we finially finished last night. Took off all the emissions junk to and replaced the cat with 3 inch pipe.

It sounds so nice and the headers look awesome. I can probably make a little video so you can hear it if anyone wants.

if you can't convince them, confuse them.

Re: Headers rule

I'll take a little video tomorrow when its light out.

Only mods are now a full exhaust (I had a custom cat back system before. no cat now). K&N filter and all the emissions junk has been taken off (air pump removed, air injection tubes on the headers are capped). Shift kit in the tranny (not really all that happy with that, not firm enough. but it was a Christmas present a couple years ago).

I don't dare go into the engine cause it has 156k miles on it (12k I've done).

Its a 305 HO. Differences between the regular 305 that came in non-SS Monte Carlos are: heads from the Cross fire Camaro, the cam from the L-81 Vette

The exhaust sounds fun, many hours to install though? What a PITA.

On the milage note, a friend of mine's Dad has an old ex CHP Mustang with ~309,000 miles on the original motor and trans!

Re: Headers rule (update)

ok here are the pics I promised (and a couple of crappy videos). The vids were taken with the digital camera and the one at the back of the car I should have put the camera futher back. They really don't do the sound justie at all. But at idle it sounds pretty decent in the vids.

As you can see I blocked off the air injection tubes with some brass caps (thanks home depot plumbing department). Woulda cut off that heat tube thingy thats around the right side header but didn't wanna risk cutting into the primary tube. The shiny pipe underneath the car is where the cat used to be.

yup plus add in the gas tanks leaks a little and I don't have the time (or another vehicle really) to fix that. 150-160 miles a tank cost me over $30 to fill. 10-12mpg sucks for not having all that much power.

Re: Headers rule

What I wouldn't give...My Prelude takes premium and will cost any where from $48 to $53 to fill from empty... and that only takes me about 400 km in town. On the highway it is much better though. Pulling the 2 bikes on an open trailer at a constant 65-70 MPH I can get around 525kms to a tank and it only takes about $25 american to fill. I just does not sounds as cool thats all.

yup. nothing like a V8 with a nice exhaust. And I don't mean to brag but I think mine is one of the best sounding cars I've ever heard. Just wish it had the power to back up its bark.

Re: Headers rule

Dude....nice headers though.

From the looks of it a good basic tune up, gapped plugs/wires/cap&rotor/PCV valve/fuel filter/valve cover gaskets would get you some nice performance and gas milage. Just run plain old Autolite or Delco plugs in it.

Re: Headers rule

those are brand new Delco plugs put in there with the headers. The wires and pcv are a year or 2 old and everything in the distributor is maybe 3 years old (around 12-15k miles I think). The valve cover gaksets were also done at the same time as the distributor stuff cause I had to do the valve seals.

Yes it does need some cleaning. and a new oil pan gasket atleast if not a new pan altogether. But I figure my friend says we can put the new engine and tranny in this summer when I have a new bike so we don't have to rush anything and can just take our time. so I won't bother cleaning it.
