Why do Jags lose value so fast?

Still looking for a car and was looking at the newer jags. it seems that after 1-3 years they lose like $15k in value (depending). Why is that? are they built like ****? Ford owns Jaguar right? is that why? Was contemplating one but am quickly decided against it.

Re: Why do Jags lose value so fast?

Old Jags (pre-Ford) used to have mediocre build quality and high maintenance costs. The new ones are on a par with the Germans (if not quite up to Lexus standards), so I wouldn't worry about it. No four wheel drive either, except for the X-Type.

Change is as good as a rest!

I've heard that Jaguar is a time share between you and your mechanic.

Re: Why do Jags lose value so fast?

All new cars lose value, the very select few become classics many many years later.

offtopic rant:
If I may ask, why look at cars like Jags? Most people buying them new don't really care about resale value.

Not trying to judge or anything but if you want to look to the future for yourself and your family invest the money into something worthwhile like real estate or outside of that thinking process have you even maxed your Roth IRA each year? Buy a nice used car that has already lost it's new car luster.
end of offtopic rant:

Back on subject, it's all supply and demand if no one wants the two year old Jag it goes down and down in value, it's that simple. But if you really feel the need to buy a high end new car look at BMW they have good resale value (but even then you will lose your shirt).

Good Luck Steg

You tend to see quite a few Jaguars on the side of the road.

You already said it in your first post. Owned by Ford. Nuff said.

If I had the $$$$$ I'd go for the AUDI RS4 when it gets released in America.

Re: Why do Jags lose value so fast?

I'd imagine it has to do with the fact that not a lot of people want a used Jag... They're somewhat of a car for eclectic tastes, which narrows the resale market. For the price there are plenty of more desirable cars.

Then again, if you really had a boner for one you can use the poor resale to your advantage and buy a cheap 2 y-o car.

And then there's this asshole...

Or you could use the depreciation as a tax benefit... that's what I am doing with my Land Rover. It's damn near paying for itself. You need to talk to a tax accountant to make sure it's legal though.

Re: Why do Jags lose value so fast?

Why do they lose value so quick?
Take your pick:
They're uglier than hell
They are mechanically suspect
There are many far better cars in the price range with more and better options
They are ugly
etc.,etc.,etc.
Choose one or all and there you have it.

FWIW, most new vehicles depreciate 50% after 3 years.

And then there's this asshole...

That's almost exactly how far my D-Max has fallen I estimate. And diesels hold their value pretty well nowadays. (they used to be awful though)

Add to that the interest you pay on the loan...and it's no wonder the finance guy for our division buys used cars always.

The used vehicle market is in the shitter right now... I'm only getting 35 grand (wholesale) for my '05 Duramaxes (full load, 55-60k MSRP) where I used to get 42+.

And then there's this asshole...

Re: Why do Jags lose value so fast?

Yeah. I looked at 05's and the salesman practically laughed when I asked him how much mine was worth. I started looking and trucks that claim to be in better shape than mine were going for mid 20's.

I'll never, ever finance the majority of a car that costs near that much again. (adjusted for dollars over time of course)

My only hope is that it makes it 3 more years without any trouble. That was my whole justification for doing it. I think it will...

I'll give ya a call in '09 for my next one.

...in bed.
