New "Mac Book Pro" released...

Well, Apple has the upper hand in the Laptop segment, for now anyway.

Today at the Macworld Expo Keynote Steve Jobs laid out the new products Apple is introducing. On the of the heavy hitters is their first Intel-powered "Mac Book Pro", which is replacing the older PowerPC equipped PowerBooks.

This thing is a screamer. Dual Core Intel chips, running at 1.83 GHz, with a 677 MHz front side bus, PCI express, SATA, and a Radeon x1600 graphics subsystem. If you want killer performance in your laptop, this is the one to get. Add in all the cool extras and the sexy industrial design, and I think Apple has one hell of a product.

Now we will have to wait and see how long before Dell, Lenovo, Fujitsu, or someone like them gets their hands on the new "Core Duo" processors and gets them into a laptop.

Check it out at http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/

I love the powercord! Lost a machine to that very thing .

I need to hear some more details but I might have snag one, get a external drive to boot the virus on so I can bring Dynojet Maps with me to the tracks It would also be nice to occasionally run Microsquish Streets.

The external burner support in iDVD is nice also

Re: New "Mac Book Pro" released...

Cool, but no thanks. Ill wait for an HP or Dell to come out (for a LOT less money) and run the pirated version of OS X for x86 on it. Alright I really won't (though others will) since I don't like piracy but Apple WTF are you thinking? Alright, off my

Re: New "Mac Book Pro" released...

A quick compare to Dull similar model with similar features but a single core chip. Also the Apple has more s/w. The Apple also has firewire (for Camcorders on travel) I also prefer the general construction of the Apple vs a Dell. Now I am sure some expert can run the Dell site better but for a quick compare the delta is small or none. Yes if you want a $700 POS laptop don't buy Apple but if you want quality...

EDIT: Oops and in addition to being able to run the 'doz virus as a dual boot the Mac can run most Linux apps with no reboot.

Re: New "Mac Book Pro" released...

The Dell you chose is $1139. The new Powerbook starts at $1999. How is that a comparison? (And every notebook I've seen lately from $600 and up has a firewire port on it.)

Not when you make it comparable in memory, OS (XP Pro), harddrive, wireless, bluetooth, etc. that was my point. Dell lowballs with a number for a system then you get a decent configuration and wham! When I made it comparable the cost was 1650ish and still inferior on the reasons stated.

(The link had is configured but obviously Dell only wants you to see the low ball price, bait and switch)

It's not bait and switch. They list the price, and the features it has. Then you can customize it from there. At least you CAN customize. With the Apple, you basically get what they want you to have.

Re: New "Mac Book Pro" released...

I hate to hurt you Dell rah-rahs out there, but the closet Dell config I just did came out to 2,209. This is for a laptop that still does not have the same high-end architecture as the new Mac Book Pro.

Apple is getting serious about the high-end laptop space. I think they realize they have a chance to make a serious dent in the market, and they are going to go for it.

The G4 PB that my last employer bought for me at $2300 was a far better laptop for the money than any other comparable PC laptop. Right before I left I spec'd a Lenovo for the COO and it was ~$200 more with less features. The only thing the Lenovo had one up on the PB was the biometric scanner... I'll be ordering my Book Pro shortly...

Re: New "Mac Book Pro" released...

Far better laptop for the money, assuming Apple has software that is useful to your profession. Once there's a Visual Studio .NET for OS/X, I'll check into it.
