?? about laptop memory??

I decided after reading a few other posts that boosting my memory would be a good idea to gain some more life out of this laptop. But I have never changed a laptop memory stick before. It appears I have 2 slots with 256 PC2100 , ddr, 266 in the laptop now. My question is how can you tell how much ram your system can handle? I see 512 sticks and 1g sticks. But I don't want to go overboard. I ran down to bestbuy earlier and the sales guy said I can use PC2700 sticks the same as PC2100. I believe he said they would be backward compatible. Any thoughts?

Re: ?? about laptop memory??

The only way to know how much is to check the manufacturers spec. Yes 2700 is faster than 2100 and will work. A few cases need matched speeds but that should not be an issue on a laptop (needed when a bank consists of two sockets and interleaving is on). I would think your laptop can take at least 1GB and if the price is right would recommend going with the 1GB chip.

www.newegg.com or www.crucial.com is the place to shop for RAM.

Re: ?? about laptop memory??

On a Mac I would recommend crucial or something from a online Mac vendor. OS X checks memory spec tighter than Windows and will rejects some cheapo memory chips. If you PM me which model you have, I will check the h/w manual for any gotchas also.

Re: ?? about laptop memory??

"Mac memory" is also priced higher for essentially the same stuff. If he buys the same spec he currently has from a PC vendor, he'll probably save a few bucks.

http://www.goldenram.com/ is a good place to check system specs and memory upgrade possibilities. Not necessarily the best memory available, but definitely not the worst either! Worst case, it's a good reference site.
