Dell and Google?

We just received some new Optiplexes and after getting them booted discovered that Dell is now shipping them with Google Desktop installed! After all of the horror stories I've heard about it indexing private documents and making the results available online, I cannot believe Dell would make that standard on a PC that is defined as a business class desktop! Almighty dollar rules?

Re: Dell and Google?

Don't most businesses wipe them out and install their own "template" OS anyway?

Don't expect private industry to respect your privacy.

There are too many advertising dollars to be made with your details.

Every single large organization I have seen either did it as they unpacked them, or had Dell image them correctly before they were shipped.

Only home users and small businesses with no IT guru usually deal with those crap default loads.

Re: Dell and Google?

The Dimesions are horrible. You name it, it's on there. The Optiplexes have always had a good load on them so we typically don't image them unless there's something special about the rollout. Too many variables to make it cost effective to have a standard image. I just thought it was odd that after our Dell rep giving up this big speech about how the Optiplexes always ship clean that they are now coming with this crap.

Is this fact? Supporting evidence? Or is it exactly what you said...horror STORIES?

I have a client that has just instructed us to include Google Desktop on their corporate SOE. I'd love to shoot it down, but I won't go to them with only "horror stories"...

This is the thread that really caught my attention. Do a quick search out there and you'll see what I mean.

Uh....yeah. I don't see anything about the results being available to anyone outside that PC. Besides that, you can disable certain features, and you can also manage the settings with Group Policy.

Google Desktop may not be necessary, but it could be useful. And from what I can see, it leaves you no less secure than if you don't use it.

I may have misread it, but there was a part talking about sending results back to Google. What I do on my pc is my business. And even worse, what my customers do on their pc's is definitely their business. I thought I read somewhere else about handling of the indexes. Or maybe I was drunk.

Mike has nothing on Bill. Bill helped me buy two bikes in the last year, both with cash.
