Re: Veritas Volume Replicator

What are you trying to accomplish? There are several toolsets out there that may be a better fit.

Block level replication to a disaster recovery site. I'm pretty much stuck with the product already as the customer has already purchased it. This is a project I sortof "inherited"

We are a disaster recovery site for a handful of clients and after testing about a dozen different volume replicators, we ended up with a $59.00 solution using Vice Versa. It transfers as fast as any of the others and can directly access the shadow copy service for snapshots. It isn't block level, but it has several fine tuning settings for concurrency and is extremely easy to use.

What plaform is this on? Windows? What type of storage equipment? Bandwidth/type of circuit between sites?

Re: Veritas Volume Replicator

Main site is MS clustered Win2k SP4 servers running on an EMC CX300 SAN. Dedicated point to point T1 between the sites. Remote site does not have duplicate hardware...Data is getting replicated to a couple of PowerEdge 2550's().

Re: Veritas Volume Replicator

ohhhhhh..... well, that removes shadow copy services out of it. Without another CLARiiON on the other end, you eliminate using EMC's stuff. What do they have as their shared cluster storage at the DR site?

With only a T1, I sure hope that you are not doing heavy disk I/O!

Veritas can do what you want. The windows build is not nearly as mature as their Unix and OS/390 stuff, but the underlying technology is the same. You are using Veritas Volume Manager (now called Storage Foundations, I believe) and an actual Veritas Volume for replication I assume.

Re: Veritas Volume Replicator

There is no shared cluster storage at the DR site...that's one of the catches There's enough storage between the two servers to hold all the data, so we're basically having to set up all the cluster resources on one server. The other server will act as Exchange...although I'm still not sure how they're expecting that to work. IMO Exchange should be live, which would mean that it would need to be at a third location to avoid a disaster at the main site and have all the mailboxes available for when the DR site comes online.

Your assumption is correct on the volume manager.
