space elevator hits 1 mile mark

The space elevator hits the one mile mark, for anyone that has not herd of this device it is a fascinating concept. Almost sounds like a scam but the science behind it is legit.

A mile? Looks like 1500 feet to me.

See here:

In this phase of testing, conducted earlier this month in Arizona, LiftPort successfully launched an observation and communication platform a full mile in the air and maintained it in a stationery position for more than six hours while robotic lifters climbed up and down a ribbon attached to the platform. The platform, a proprietary system that the company has named "HALE" (High Altitude Long Endurance), was secured in place by an arrangement of high altitude balloons, which were also used to launch it. The robotic lifters measured five feet, six inches and climbed to a height of more than 1500 feet, surpassing its last test record by more than 500 feet.

Actually a mile tether that does not seperate due to its own mass is an achievement. Imagine as a firefighter holding a two story rope dangling down. Remember the rope has the same pull as you feel. Now extend that to a mile.

I think the climbers are self powered also. There was a concept at one time that some of the power could come from the line itself (static potential or something, I can't remember)

EDIT: Also remember than the climber is going up a nanotube construction without breaking it

Believe that's true...think there were problems with trying to use the power generated by the line itself and went to battery powered climbers.

Re: space elevator hits 1 mile mark

Anything is possible. There is very little out of our reach.

Think about it. About 100 years ago Doctors warned that the human heart would stop at speeds as great as 50 + MPH. Many of us here on this site hit 3 times that mark on the track.

Airplanes were a thought at one time.
Can you imagine the response to the early thoughts of a Helicopter?
What about a man walking on the moon? This happened about 30 years ago and people still have trouble believing it.
How crazy would a microwave oven sound to people in the 1800's ? All they had were wood-burning stoves.

I think the idea of a Space Elevator is nuts, but I still believe it's do-able with the right resources.

The SSS had one but we took it down since it kept slicing flying saucers in half Great for looking down on minions while it lasted though.
