Windows XP question

I want to create a user that would ONLY have access to internet, no access what so ever to hard drive or anything else. We have ''guest'' in the house for the next 2 weeks and when they saw the lap top they ask to use it... I said OK but now I think they use it a little too much....

I know how to create a new user but not how to give so little access..

Anybody

Re: Windows XP question

You could create a user that launched IE in kiosk mode on startup, but they could still break out of it without too much effort. You could try doing some policy-based stuff, but it's such a pain in the butt, especially if it's temporary...

Re: Windows XP question

Yeah, policy would be the way to go, but a lot of trouble.

That's my problem..... They are friend of my boss... so kinda hard for me to tell them to stay away from the computer..... I thought that for them to see that all of a sudden there is a new user profile with very limited access would make the message pretty clear

That they use the computer while I'm here is fine by me...... but when we came back last night and saw them surfing the net downstairs, when we left the computer in our room upstairs kinda pissed me off. Some people just dont know when to stop

Re: Windows XP question

Set up a password on it so they can't use it unless you're there to log them in.

Yep...... thought about it.... that's what I might end up doing. + it will be fun to see the look on their face..... '' Heeeee, looks like we need a password now..... can you tell me what it is ''

Hmm... Is it a laptop? It would suck to have battery "problems" while they're there.

Could just stuff the thing in a drawer until they are gone.

I'll echo the password. If you want to get even more creative, you might even be able to restrict them to only a few select websites

That's what I had in mind, I wanted to create a guest user with ONLY internet explorer on the desktop, and all files on the drives hidden.... I'm quite sure it can be done, I'll work on it. Already added password on my user and Veronica.

Re: Windows XP question

Problem solved..... I just created a guest user, opened it to check it out, the first message to pop up was ''unable to use wireless device in guest user''

Re: Windows XP question

If you have all your personal files in your user profile you can make them private by right clicking on your My Documents folder, then going to the Sharing tab and then checking the Make this folder private checkbox.
