Re: Mech question re: YZ450F

This question is from an acquaintance of mine. I (obviously) don't know the answer but one of you probably does. Please let me know.
Thx.

'Can I replace the 5th gear in the gearbox that Yamaha removed on the 03 YZ450F (4 Speed) with the one from the WR450 (5 Speed)?'

Just a wild guess, but if the cases are machined the same, you can perhaps transpland a whole 5 speed tranny in there. Would take the the whole thing, not just one gear. I know Yamaha did the same thing in the late 70's, and 80's with bikes like the YSR 50, YSR80, GT80, etc. Trannys were 4 or 5 speed, and some had reverse shifting drums and wide or close ratio transmisions. All which were interchangable as a unit since the cases were the same.

Re: Mech question re: YZ450F

I cant remember the exact answer, but in short 'no'

Have him give a shout @ www.thumpertalk.com , I know this was discussed over there recently.

My question is, what does he need a 5th gear for? I love my 4 speed, although it does take some getting used to.
If he's motarding it and making it more civilian, just get the WR and save yourself the hassle. 25# wont make a big difference on that bike on the street anyways

why put off today what you can wake up late and forget to do tomorrow.

Maci, I'm no homo. Homo. Thanks. I can't believe how much I've been on the road lately... that's a whole other thread but it's been over 10,000km (over 3 weeks) in the cage! It's not over yet either... I'm away again from Friday-Monday - alllllll cage driving. *sigh*

G-Force, thanks for the input, I'll pass it on. I think the guy is looking for alternatives to achieving a higher top end. We've toyed with the math of going up 2 teeth in the front sprocket which might be ok, but the other option is to add the 5th gear from the WR as the YZ/WR kinda share the same gear box - I have to say 'kinda' because I don't know any details about it, nor am I that mechanically knowledgeable (right Maci? )

Re: Mech question re: YZ450F

Oh, and im going off memory here but I think the cases are different, because the WR has the E-start and the YZ has the kick only, and im pretty sure thats a different case.
