Big Oil = Big Payouts to Execs

With Big Oil repeatedly taking it on the chin for filling the pockets of its executives rather than spending a little money to reduce the cost of gas for consumers comes this:

Meanwhile, the last new refinery built in the U.S. came three decades ago.

Don't misunderstand, I'm not in favor of a command economy, but for the love of gawd, this whole deal about gasoline prices is wearing thin.

Um, technically speaking, all companies make profit at consumers expense.

They raise prices b/c they can. Simple as that. If I could cash in on that and endow my children's children, I would too.

Re: Big Oil = Big Payouts to Execs

Chain, the "no new refineries, yet many closed" in the last 30 years thing is one of the largest contributing reasons for high gas prices - along with not enough oil production locally and politics on both sides.
Now, why do you think there haven't been any new ones built, and many have been shuttered?
Hint: The oil companies WANT to build more, it is the ecoterror groups that make it not worth it.

Huh uh. The oil companies LIKE for people to constantly be bitching about them. It's just a big conspiracy and a game to them. It has nothing to do with possibly disturbing the mating habits of the North American blind albino garden slug.

Is a paradigm worth 20 cents?

Re: Big Oil = Big Payouts to Execs

Good quote in that article:

Quote:
Shareholder Emil Rossi, author of one of the resolutions, says that although he's done well as a longtime owner of Exxon stock, he believes the executives are keeping too much for themselves.
"(Raymond) took over a good company," said Rossi, of Boonville, Calif. "He didn't bring it out from being a bad company, so his pay is clean out of reason. It's not because of his smartness."
Maybe people should use their "smartness" to invest in Exxon stock instead of whining?

Is a paradigm worth 20 cents?

Re: Big Oil = Big Payouts to Execs

Blame the politicians for MAKING it a managed market. First they make it burdensome to drill any where in the US or even put up wind farms (Kennedy likes that as long as it is not near HIS beach house). Second they mandate a bazillion different formulations effectively reducing competition. Third they mandated the use of Oxygenators like MTBE that distorted the market further. Fourth they are lifting protections for MTBE May 5 because the new golden boy is ethanol (read farm lobby).

In short the bastids in DC are you much harder than any oil executive.

Re: Big Oil = Big Payouts to Execs

What about the EPA? Don't they share in the responsibility since they are the ones that mandated that ****?
They forced that crap on us for a few years, and every year reports showed how it contributed to more pollution due to the way it ruins vehicle components and how it hurts the soils, but all they cared about was the emissions numbers - which were actually worse overall than without.
It was finally lifted a couple years ago and the air has been noticably cleaner and easier to breathe.

True, it's much easier to blame the evil, dastardly, good-for-nothing Big Business, and especially the oil companies.
