Networking Q

I'm stumped...I have a client that has intermittent issues sending email to a domain name. I started looking at DNS and found a few things wrong(such as wrong IP's listed for internal DNS servers) but what's really bizarre is I can't ping the remote mail server's IP from all but one server on the network. Everyone uses the same gateway, ICMP is not blocked in the firewall. If I ping the domain name, it's the same thing. DNS resolves the IP, but won't ping.

Any suggestions?

Re: Networking Q

That is odd. What's the internal IP/subnet range? What IP is the gateway on?

Re: Networking Q

Pretty standard... Have you tried a tracert to see if you can detect where it's stopping? I would guess it's something at the firewall, but...

Re: Networking Q

Won't do a tracert either. On the one server that is able to ping out the tracert goes all the way to the destination.

Re: Networking Q

How about picking a later gateway form the successful tracert and pinging it from a non-working host. And have you tried power-cycling the firewall?

Re: Networking Q

I'm an hour away. Not feasible for the time being, but an idea.

I don't think pinging from a "different later gateway" will do anything if it can't make it past the first one.

Haven't been able to reboot the firewall...

What is critical with a tracert is where it stops. Do you have ANY successful hops before you get nothing but timeouts? If you are not even leaving the subnet you have isolated your problem to something local.

That's what I was thinking. He said they weren't successful, so I took that as meaning it didn't pass the first gateway. Sounds like a router issue...

Re: Networking Q

Is there any access lists on your gateway?

You're correct...it doesn't even get to the first hop. It's something local for sure. I'll reboot the firewall tonight and see what happens from there.

There is an access list in the gateway, but not outbound.

Re: Networking Q

If there are some switches in between as well, go ahead and HUP those as well. You could have some CAM table issues that could be screwing you up.

Can the servers that cannot perform this tracert do anything else on the network?

Re: Networking Q

The rest of the servers perform fine, absolutely zero issues. Two of the servers are DC's(also handling DHCP, WINS, DNS), one of them is an Exchange 2k3 box(sp2). The servers that are able to do the tracert are Citrix PS4 servers.

Re: Networking Q

Yeah, it's not switching then. Certainly something on the router.
