I'm gonna go out on a limb and say WW II, maybe. Just a wild stab in the dark though.

nah, they are just estimating energy release, as in force... They know about how fast its going and can guess-timate the mass...

Depending on your train of thought, its general relativity (curved space time of least resistance and the release of said energy) or one of newton's laws (second I think)...

Re: Armageddon

I don't think much will save your life if that thing hits. It'll more then likely knock Earth out of it's orbit and everything will go boom

Ok where do I want to be when this thing hits?

Don't drive a hearse in the carpool lane.

Re: Armageddon

Yeah, there isn't really anything we can do if something that size hits us. I'd rather be right under it than on the other side, waiting for the consequences to take effect.

Re: Armageddon

It's less than a mile wide. The atmosphere will burn a bit more of it off, also.
If that thing were to hit, it would cause local destruction but not a massive earth altering event.
Of course the odds of it hitting earth are only slightly better than mladin winning the AMA SuperBike title next year, so no one needs to worry.

A mile in diamater and only 'local destruction'? Nope, especially since it's most likely to hit water.

If it hits, we'll probably go extinct, or at the very least get reduced to a few (privileged) K once again.

...at least the odds are that it won't hit... but something eventually will. Aren't we overdue for a major strike?

Maybe. The mass is imposing, but far more so is the kinetic energy of the thing due to its velocity. Consider the space-garbage nightmare facing us now: bits and pieces of our own equipment zipping around earth at miles-per-second. Well, if a watch button-battery-sized chunk of aluminum can go through thick plate steel (one of the reasons we're working on rail guns), imagine what a 1-mile-wide iron (or whatever it's made out of) ball bearing would do at an even greater velocity.

IMVHO early deflection would be our only chance... and we'd better know WTF we're doing, otherwise we might actually turn a near-collision into, well, armageddon.
