Re: Ease drop on Chain!

I don't know what exactly they've done via that webpage, but it would appear some of the radio traffic purported to be 'real time' is, in reality, recorded bits of traffic and are not taking place live. Also, it sounds like they're picking up other agencies as well, one of the two local sheriffs offices and even some stuff I'm not recognizing. Hrmm.

Anyway, if you ever want to ease drop on me and you live in the Omaha metro area, just show up to Bruegger's at about 8:30 a.m., 40th and Dodge - I'm there like clockwork for a jalepeno bagel and a hot cup of coffee. If you ask nicely, maybe I'll take you on a ride-a-long. 929Flyer's met me there (and he'll never be the same, lol)

That's a pretty cool idea.

I used to have a scanner hooked up to a company intranet at SGI (everyone was streaming content, mostly techno music but I hooked up my scanner and it became a cult classic.. so much so I left it there when I quit DOH! ). Never did get it back.

A few years earlier we were the typical nightmare for cops. Had 4 scanners in my big Caddy and we'd cruise to the location of all good car stops or accidents, take photos etc.

Once we accidentlally ended up in the middle of a perrimeter (got to the scene too fast) during an a hunt for an armed intruder. It as not totally comforting to consider this since they never *checked* to see if two morons were crouched down on the floorboards of the car with a bunch of police scanners in it while they canvased the neighborhood for the dude. Got stuck there for hours before they finally moved the cars off the street and we were able to escape.

I also used to get some really nasty looks from cops when I'd get pulled over and they would see I was listening to them on my portable scanner. One even cursed me out because it was causing feedback every time he key'd the mike to call in my info. OOPS. How I never got arrested I will never know..

Scanners are illegal in cars in Michigan.

It's largely going to be a moot point in coming years anyway. More and more agencies are going to wireless data transmission and dispatching. I have an MDC (Mobile Data Computer) in my cruiser and don't have to say a word on the radio if I choose not to. All the better to sneak up on unsuspecting you, hehe...

Yeah and I hope it's encrypted too!!! It would be cool to have one those terminals and sniff the datastream off the airwaves and see what's REALLY going on.

When I used to do this fun and exciting stuff, scanners in cars were totally legal in CA. Hell, used to have 3 or 4 clipped right to the dashboard, no need to hide them. I don't know what the laws are now and really don't care. Althought I've thought about adding one to the bike. Catching a snipped of car-stop might tip one off to a possible 'enhanced speed enforcement zone' in the area.

Re: Ease drop on Chain!

We use an 800Mhz trunked system that cant be picked up with your $20 scanner. I have been told that there are scanners for trunked frequencies, but they are a bit pricey. We have guys that give out personal phone #'s over the air all the time because they think no one is listening. Not me.

I do like our radios though, crystal clear and the dispatcher can hear us if we key up while they are talking (if we are in trouble or get in a foot pursuit while they are dispatching a call.)
