Re: Tacoma owners....

45k on mine, no probs at all....it handles better off road than it does on, that's about it, and buy THIS for it, it makes it a lot of fun, just watch out when it rains

Re: Tacoma owners....

I had a 2001 almost just like that (TRD stuff). No problems other than a slightly rattly interior. Truck ran flawlessly and was great... Somewhat rough ride, but all else was good...

My biggest reason for wanting a Tacoma

I've already experienced some of it's off-road capabilities. Took one out for a test drive on Saturday, and *ahem* I happened to come accross this empty field

Re: Tacoma owners....

Are the beds on those things long enough to carry a 929? *I'm assuming it would be a gate-down type of process.

I love my little Subaru but this past month has made me really consider a pickup truck. *I want a smaller one (Dakota? *Tacoma?) because I do quite a bit of driving and gas would be a killer... *(I have 85,000km on my 2001Impreza... that's over 53,000miles)

[Edit: Not to mention parking in the city, SUV like handling, overkill hauling capacity and expense of a big truck...]

Gate down I'm sure. Or put it corner to corner. Not sure how my RR would fit

Re: Tacoma owners....

I hear corner-to-corner is asking for trouble.

So you guys like your tacoma's? How are they on power? That article said 190hp... That doesn't sound like much.

Re: Tacoma owners....

Mine had 190hp for about 500 miles, so I can't comment, you can close the tailgate on the xtracab if you go corner to corner, it's a pain to load and unload like that though.

Re: Tacoma owners....

The Toyota.ca website bites. *It's hard to find information on the Tacoma there. *grrr*

Anyway, I wanted a manual transmission and to get a Tacoma with manual transmission I am relegated to either a 142hp, 160lb.ft engine (which is practically what I have in the car, only mine is awd) or pay > $6000 to go up to a 4x4 with a larger engine. *I may as well just buy a trailer for the car.

edit: ps. sorry for jacking this thread.

Re: Tacoma owners....

I've had 2 Tacomas a 97 with the 4 banger and a 02 with the 6. Indeed, the bed is about 2-3 inches too short to close with a 929. Both ran flawless and I loved them. I only upgraded to a Tundra for towing capacity for my trailer. But I liked my Tacoma better, better handling, ease of parking, etc. If you are thinking about ever towing a trailer more substancial than a small utility or perhaps a small 6x10 single axle enclosed, I would go with a Tundra. That 6 while pretty peppy, dogs when you get over 2500 pounds in tow.

I've done it several times without any problems As long as you strap it down good and keep it off the sidestand you should be fine

Go here too see all info (complaints, recalls, TSB's, etc) regarding the year & model you're considering.

I just looked at my Consumer Reports buying guide book for 2003, looked up the '99 Toyoat Tacome 4WD, and across the board the trouble spot %'s are very low (5% or less), with most being 2% or less. The areas that are looked at are:
Engine, cooling, fuel, ignition, transmission, electrical, A/C, suspension, brakes, exhaust, power equipment, paint/trim/rust, integrity, hardware. It's predicted as a reliable vehicle.

Check out the NSTSA link above. If you don't find any issues and the price is good, go for it!

Re: Tacoma owners....

I had a '98 Tacoma PreRunner (the 2WD that looks like a 4WD). I loved it. The 190 hp was fine for my purposes. I'd still have it if some lady hadn't run a stop sign.

Is a paradigm worth 20 cents?
