Would this make for a decent PC?

Based on the specs...whaddya think? This will be used as the garden variety home computer/home office machine. A few MS Office apps at a time, e-mail and web browsing, some photo editing (nothing too intensive), perhaps some gaming come wintertime.

Re: Would this make for a decent PC?

Should more than fulfil your needs. It oughta run circles around my Dimension 8400 with a P4, 3.4 Ghz, 250Mb HD, 1 Gig Ram, etc, etc..

But if you're going to do some serious gaming, you might want to pick up a dedicated PCI-Express video card with some more horsepower. That oughta lick the 128Mb shared video memory it's equipped with out of the box.

Maybe you can upgrade it right from the Mfgr? Warranty and all?

Re: Would this make for a decent PC?

Thanks for the input. I'm told you can't compare the AMD chipset to Pentium side by side (that the speed isn't the same from one machine to the other).

PC is probably fine, but I'd skip that monitor. You can get 20" WS monitors from Dell for that price.

Re: Would this make for a decent PC?

My brother had a Cow box and the quality was horrid. Also they had it set up so the ability to change the OS was low (NEVER seen that before and it was not just me that tried) Based on that one machine I would run far from another cow box

Must obey the sheep dog

Chain, Newegg has a 20" widescreen LCD for $299 with free shipping. As far as the PC goes, I'd run far from it. That bundle of software will cause you nothing but headaches.

Re: Would this make for a decent PC?

Just got a Dell E510 with Dual Core 2.8 P4's, 2 gigs of RAM, 20" widescreen, dual DVD burners, blah blah blah, for $300 more than your combo there. Drop the 2 gigs of RAM and they'd be roughly the same price.

Re: Would this make for a decent PC?

Last night I priced out a 510 with a 19" monitor and 1GB of ram and it was still below the combined grand of the Gateway...and it had free shipping etc etc.

Re: Would this make for a decent PC?

It would work just fine for your intended situation. As others have pointed out, it's not the best deal and maybe not the best box, but for a home computer you're not going to have any of these overblown horror story problems. It's not something I'd want to support in a business environment, but your not using it that way.
Don't worry about any of that crap.
However, look around - there are better deals. And if it were me I would go with XP Pro, not the Media Center edition.

Re: Would this make for a decent PC?

Good input guys, thanks!

For the record, the bundle is on sale at Best Buy and would cost us about $920 for the PC, monitor, and a nice Canon printer. I only linked you to the two Gateway pages (which list full MSRP) so you could take a look at the specs.

The last home computer I bought nine years ago was a Gateway and I had good luck with it, FWIW.
