Windows XP Pro vs Home help

Here is the issue:
I am considering a Macbook and setting it up to run Windows also. However a full version (nothing to upgrade from) of XP Pro is nasty expensive. I think I can actually get a cheesy motherboard and the OEM version from NewEgg cheapest. I plan on using the windows part for Microsoft Streets, Dynojet maps and little else. So do I really even need Pro or is Home enough?

Re: Windows XP Pro vs Home help

Get Pro.

You can get the full OEM version for $129 from tigerdirect.com. (You have to buy a $0.17 floppy cable with it to qualify to buy the OEM version.)

What is the difference between XP Home and XP Pro?

I use Remote Desktop to connect to my home machine, so Pro is a must for me.

Re: Windows XP Pro vs Home help

This thread shouldn't even exist. Go Pro. Home is worthless for anyone wanting to do more than check their email and go on the Internet.

Re: Windows XP Pro vs Home help

Hmm. I'm not seeing the XP Pro OEM deal on their web site. We have a store here in town so that's where I get it. You could call and ask I guess...

For the $50 premium is their other reasons. This machine will not spend much time in the 'doz (I got a regular desktop for testing and such). The only other reason than listed that I can think of now is MAYBE to have a windows and mac version of s/w when (if) I get my data acquisition stuff going.

Re: Windows XP Pro vs Home help

Sheep... get the pro. I have banged my head against "Home" edition (read all crazy crippled) so many times I should wear a helmet.

They turn off all sorts of networking options that really becomes a pain in the ass real quick.
