Military Pilots - lame question.

Question about Zarqawi's Limo , you can see in the vid the compass etc. but what is that white dot that sort of moves around the screen? I know in other video's I've seen it's tracking eye movement, but in this one it seems to float around and stick certain places?

Just curious...
Thanks

Re: Military Pilots - lame question.

I'm gonna guess that it's a laser designator being picked up by the sensors on the aircraft, possibly from another plane such as a Predator. You would think it would be more stable if that's what it was.

But I really have no idea.

Well, I'd tell you but I can't see it - I have old Flash or Javascript error, and don't have admin capabilities on this network.

It very well may be the IR pip for the sidewinder in that when the pip is in the crosshairs the missile seeker could have lock?

That was my first thought, since there were two aircraft engaging, was wondering if it was some kinda alignment thing for trajectory or sighting with an illuminator. But as stated, it's awkward non relational movement seems to indicate it's something else.

maybe it just floats constantly even when not in use?

Re: Military Pilots - lame question.

Well, I got an e-mail back from a guy that knows about things like this. He said that from the video he could tell it was a US Block 30 variant of the F-16, and that the video was shot from the plane actually lasing the target (hence the blinking L right before impact). The video was thanks to a LITENING Pod on the belly of the aircraft.

He discounted my theory of another laser targeting system, since you wouldn't want two laser designators working in the same area so that the LGB wouldn't get confused. But he also wouldn't tell me what the drifting dot was.

Re: Military Pilots - lame question.

Damn, I just love Lockheed Martin Technology... Well, LM didn't make the f-16 originally, General Dynamics did. But they get credit for it now. I still enjoy walking down the factory line seeing them put together. Makes my heart go pitter patter...
