iPod Producer Working Conditions

Apple eyes labor conditions at iPod plant - Yahoo! News

This has the potential to be interesting.

Foxconn builds everything from popular cell phone models, to a large percentage of various branded computers. I'd guess iPods are a lower volume product than many of the others they build, but don't know for sure.

I've been to the Shenzhen factory numerous times, and though I don't know the pay rates, and haven't toured the whole thing (it is literally a city) at least the electronics assembly areas are safe. They use the same equipment they use everywhere else in the world. Most of the engineers I met working there are from overseas as the pay is much better than at home (in Singapore for example).

It's pretty shitty Apple was singled out on this one, and not the subcon, like Foxconn, or whoever else it could be. Wonder if Creative funded the "report"?

...in bed.

Re: iPod Producer Working Conditions

The Apple name gets the bigger headline just like Nike did a few years ago.

Re: iPod Producer Working Conditions

Yes, but this allows people to directly see that Foxconn is just a supplier in Apple's supply chain and people can directly target them. I don't remember hearing anything about the Subcon building Nike shoes. (and BTW, there are bigger names using Foxconn on a large scale)

I think this story will either die because people think it's stupid, or you're going to see several other people get tagged for doing biz in China...as reporters dig in and find out these guys make stuff for everyone.

We'll see...

Nope. It's Canada's fault.
