Any frequent travelers to Hawaii here?

I am going to Hawaii in September for my honeymoon and I am looking for plane tickets. Anyone have any tips on finding cheap ones to the islands?
I want to buy them and get it out of the way, but if I can save money I would like to do that too. I usually save the most on my flights by buying about 20 days out, but Im scared these tickets will be through the roof by then???? I hear the end of Sept is the start of the off-season so I was hoping waiting would get me a huge deal.
Ive done the usual internet scouring, Sidestep, Hawaiian Air, Orbits, Travelocity, etc. Mainly I just want to know if I should buy them well in advance or if I could get away with waiting.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

Re: Any frequent travelers to Hawaii here?

Usually (but not always) the price is the same if you buy them now or up to 21 days before. Then they start going up. The main exception is if the plane starts filling up, they will raise the price of the tickets.

You can get good deals with the non-airline sites (Travelocity, Orbitz, etc.) but those fares are highly restricted as far as changes, etc. Also, if you have a cancelled flight or miss a connection, the cheapie tickets are the last ones to get accommodated on new flights.

Since you are here in SD, Hawaiian Air is probably your best bet, as they have direct service from Lindbergh to the Islands. Pretty much everyone else is going to connect via LAX or SFO.

While stationed in Germany, I flew to the states once a month for long weekends:

Flying out of and in to a major hub will always net you a lower price. Sometimes sacrificing a bit of driving time will save you more than you'll spend on gas.

Check all the airports around you and not just one or two.

Buy about 3-4 weeks out, then keep checking with whichever service you purchased from. If a lower fare comes up later, call them and ask for the lower fare. I did this a few times. Sometimes, the best fare actually showed up a day or two before the flight due to cancellations.

Re: Any frequent travelers to Hawaii here?

I wouldn't wait, I searched on some random sept dates and the fares came in the ballpark of $400, they aren't going to drop much below that.

Here are a couple of good search tools.

ITA is the brains behind Orbitz and a few others, I like this site for quick searches.

This is a site that passes the dates you enter into a few cheap fare sites, the results come back in a bunch of popups. Nothing special but it saves times.
