Are you ready? - SoCal residents

The time has been offically presented as 8:14pm this evening for the very first launch of the Delta IV rocket program from VAFB. It will be launching from complex, Slic 6 which is towards the southern edge of the base so those of you in Santa Barbara area should have a great view.

Others in so-cal may see the plume but do to the trajectory of the lauch it won't be very high in the sky. You need to look north slightly above the horizon and you might be able to see it. It's not a Delta II, it's a LOX / Hydrogen engine so the plume is steam and therefore not very visable. There will be two solid strap-on motors and they can be seen but they will fall off about 6 mins into flight.

Enjoy the show, and if anything changes, I'll post it. Otherwise check updates on Spaceflight Now.

Yeah the weather is a factor at this point near the pad as well. Begining tanking procedures, but still a chance for no-go.

Tomorrow is to have better weather all the way around. This is the largest rocket ever to be launched from the west coast!

Tanking complete. 2 hours 14 mins to launch.

May be a wash for viewing... Clouds south of the facility are really preventing anything good.

Couldn't see it...there's a lot of smoke in the air here due to a fire in the local mtns.

Re: Are you ready? - SoCal residents

When I lived in Bakersfield I could see the missiles being launched from VAFB with quite a good view. I got use to them - there was a time a few years ago when those things were in the air all the time. I think they were testing the Missile Defense System. It's a site to see if you have never seen one.

When I lived at Vandenberg, they would almost blow out the windows from the rattling. You could feel the things launching.

Re: Are you ready? - SoCal residents

I was lucky enough to watch a Minotaur launch during my Northrop Grumman days. Pretty awesome.

Watching the shuttle launch (or the new CEV) is one of my "cross off the list" things.
