New Windows - Pella? Andersen?

I am shopping for new windows for the homestead. I am looking for double hung windows. Most of them are 30" x 68". Since my windows are about 50 years old, I am looking for some more energy-conserving windows. I have settled on wood windows rather than vinil, as a matter of aestetics and to improve the value of the property.

I have looked at Andersen windows. I liked the vinyl rails on them. I looked at Pella windows - whoo! those are expensive, but really nice. I haven't set a budget yet as I don't know what's out there.

What recommendations can I get for window brands?

Re: New Windows - Pella? Andersen?

We just went a company called Paramount Improvement. I don't remember what brand of window they installed but it was double paned with low e. I can't remember if they are gas filled or not. But as you may already know make sure they are sealed very well from the outside and inside to prevent any air leakage. It obviously does no good to spend $$$ and not install them correctly. On a side note, we have one window in the house thats not premium quality I think it is a crest line?? Complete junk. You can find them at one of the home improvement centers. Doing the install your self?

I lived not too far from Pella some time ago. They are 1st class all the way. We have never had a problem with any Pella window. Hope it helps.

Re: New Windows - Pella? Andersen?

Yeah, we are installing ourselves. We have lots of pro experience in the family to draw upon.

I am really inspired to install new windows this year with natural prices looming for the winter. That's why I am looking for low-E argon-filled, etc.....

This inquiry reminds me of a few other home improvement shopping experiences. I bought shopped around for an air compressor. I started at Home Deopt as it is really close to my house. Then I went to Menards and Lowes. Ultimately, HD had the product and price that I liked the best. It was the same experience with garage doors. I have a feeling that if I buy windows from a big box store, it will be the same case: Just get it from Home Depot.

Re: New Windows - Pella? Andersen?

I had this old sliding glass door on the back of my house. The interstate 10 Fwy is about 70 feet away behind a sound wall. The vinyl Pella sliding glass door I replaced it with cut down the sound incredibly. What I do regret is not getting the door with the blinds built inside. Pella has a few different levels of product. Got mine at Lowes where they stock the econo line of Pella.

If you're gonna do it, don't skimp. They'll be there for quite some time.

Re: New Windows - Pella? Andersen?

Quality is everything in windows...especially 20+ years later. Pella are probably the best, with Andersen and Marvin offering comparable products. I have all three brands in my home...

Re: New Windows - Pella? Andersen?

I have Grand View windows and have been happy with them. Anderson or Pella are excellent, but not all are created equal, there's different qualities.
Just don't get the Home Depot's brand, American Craftsman I think they're called. I put them in my garage and am really glad they're not in the house. Junk.

Re: New Windows - Pella? Andersen?

Yeah, I got that impression about those American Craftsman windows. However, I might buy some for the little basement hopper windows. Those things look like they are 70 years old.
